If high school was the best time of your life, and you constantly find yourself reminiscing about the “good days,” then you are doing college wrong!
Here are 10 reasons why college is better than high school:
1. Sleeping In
You don’t have to wake up at the butt-crack of dawn in order to make it to homeroom on time--because thankfully homeroom doesn't exist. I personally believe going to school in the darkness of the morning should be illegal, and to incoming freshmen's delight, it basically is! In college, sometimes your first class won’t start until noon, so you can bet that date you scheduled with your bed will last a lot longer than you’re used to. Warning: These are not the actual faces of morning bus riders. Something is extremely wrong with this picture. No one is that happy going to school at 6:45 a.m. Don't fall for the lies.
2. Bumming It All Day, Every Day
It is more acceptable to look completely unacceptable. Why, you ask? Because no one really cares what you wear, and most of us roll out of bed and go right to class without much prepping or priming. Sweatpants and gym shorts are your best friends, and no one judges you for it.
3. Time Feels Endless
You have so much free time! The average college student has about two classes a day instead of eight, which might I add, are all in a row. What does one do with all this free time, you ask? Anything you want: go get lunch with friends off-campus, take a nap, or maybe work out a bit. But whatever you do, you must watch Netflix. Netflix is how college students relate to each other, therefore, binge-watching it is your only option. You have no choice.
4. Surrounded By Friends All the Time
Your best friend either lives in your dorm building or the dorm building a few minutes away. If you’re lucky, your best friend is actually your roommate or basically your roommate because he/she is always in your dorm. If your roommate is your best friend, then be prepared for him/her to keep you up with random late-night conversations, even when you desperately need to sleep. Don't worry, you can be the cause of his/her sleep deprivation another night.
5. Midday Naps Are Now a Reality
6. Having Interests Is Now Cool
People take clubs and organizations more seriously. Don’t get me wrong, we still have fun, but it’s not just “Hey, I’m going to join this club to goof around with my friends," or "I need something to put on my college application.” It’s no longer cool to be uninterested in the club/organization you're in or to just be doing it for resume building. If you’re in one, you should love it or at least like it. If you don’t, well, you probably won’t last long in one.
7. Costumes Are Almost Always Acceptable
Themed parties do not only occur on Halloween. Yes, folks, it is true! You can be a hula girl, a jungle animal, a redneck, or even Winnie the Pooh almost every weekend. Choose wisely and get creative.
8. Feed Me
Free food during finals week is probably as good as it gets. Everyone is cheering for you to get through the last week of testing. What better way to motivate college students than to give us free food?!
9. Learning is More Enjoyable
You get to choose your classes, and usually you can fulfill your requirements while taking classes you enjoy. We do not all have to take the same math, science, history, etc. requirements. In college, logic counts as a math class, and “What if Harry Potter is Real” counts as a history class. If you hate history, I’m sure you can find a class to meet your needs.
10. You Are Treated Like an Adult
While you're away at college, you get to practice being an adult. This means you get to make most of your own decisions. You don't have to ask to sleep over at a friend's or tell your parents where you're going. No more constant nagging to make your bed, do the dishes, or take the trash out. Mom isn't there to make you wear pants around your dorm, either (hopefully your roommate doesn't mind the no-pants life). How ya like me now, Mom?
However, don't get too sweet on yourself. Just as in high school, you're probably still financially dependent on your parents; therefore, they still get some say over how you live your college life! Enjoy your transition to adulthood. It's overwhelmingly exciting and chaotic, but in the best of ways.
