Have you ever wondered what it would be like to study in another country and speak a completely different language everyday? Were you ever curious to make friends with the international kids at your school? It's easier to be friends with people from the same culture as you, but sometimes, experiencing something new is worthwhile. Befriending students from foreign countries does not only expand your connections, but is also quite beneficial. Here are 10 perks of being friends with international students.
1. Cursing in 10 different languages.
And getting to know more than just "Ni Hao" or "hola, como estas?" And other people will just be like:
2. Knowing the taste of authentic international food.
Sooner or later, we will probably cook or take you to the restaurant that we believe to have the best of our food. You will get to taste everything from entrees, snacks, desserts and drinks. And you won't have to ask the waiter "can you describe the dish?" or "how does this taste like?"
3. Hunger no longer exists in your dictionary.
Say bye to instant noodles and hi to Chinese food delivery at 12 a.m. Perhaps because of the disappointment for campus food and the reminiscence of our home country food, we tend to eat out more often.
4. Owning exotic gifts that are not "made in the USA."
There may be times when you come across a cute Japanese Hello Kitty bag, or a Korean star music disc. We wouldn't mind bringing you those after returning from a holiday.
5. Having a private math/science tutor.
Clearly, this will happen if you’re friend with one of the Asians.
6. Unexpected amusement from our accent
Most of international students have an accent. Thus, sometimes we pronounce words differently in a fun, cute way and you'll always enjoy correcting/making fun of us.
7. No worry about accommodation if you travel to our countries.
A native tour guide, a human translator and more reasons to travel overseas.
8. Widening your knowledge with new cultures.
Learn about the Lunar New Year and different holidays we celebrate, or know about our different preference, such as how Asians like white skin, not tanned skin, or pick up the bargain culture. So next time if you and your American friends bump into a related topic, you can show off your knowledge.
9. Your turn to give guidance.
We need you! Flying halfway around the Earth to an entirely different world with a different culture and different people is a huge change for us. Therefore, we need your guide to adapt to the culture, language/slang and every little detail of your home country.
10. And finally, with us, you can learn to be WILD!
Well, if you have enough guts, one day you will be able to try pork intestine, chicken feet, fried insects, fish sauce, durian, or ... a balut (if you don't know what it is, try Google *winkie face*).
