Recently I read Tina Fey’s book “Bossy Pants”.
First off, I really need emphasize how rare it is for me to sit and enjoy a book. After following the A.P. honors track in high school, and then continuing to study literature in college- reading has become more of a chore than a leisure activity. Which is such a bummer! I am now working to once again read solely for the beauty of it- and “Bossy Pants” was a great first step.
I think what made it such an impactful read, was how genuine the narration was. Fey discusses many things including her understanding of/ close knit relationships with gay people. Her battles against gender discrimination. Society’s warped view of the female body. And her experience as the boss in a male dominated industry. Though the pages were packed with clever jokes and sarcasm, the book was overarchingly sincere- and I learned a lot about how to be a powerful woman in today’s world.
So yes, I have a huge girl crush on Tina Fey. And in case you haven’t had the chance to read her book yet- here are 10 impactful (or just hilarious) quotes that will undoubtedly draw you in to the Fey Fan Club (which I just made up but I’m sure already exists).
1. “MAKE STATEMENTS also applies to us women: Speak in statements instead of apologetic questions. No one wants to go to a doctor who says, “I’m going to be your surgeon? I’m here to talk to you about your procedure? I was first in my class at Johns Hopkins, so?” Make statements, with your actions and your voice.”
2. “Gay people don’t actually try to convert people. That’s Jehovah’s Witnesses you’re thinking of.”
3. "I was walking home alone from school and I was wearing a dress. A dude drove by and yelled, “Nice tits.” Embarrassed and enraged, I screamed after him, “Suck my dick.” Sure, it didn’t make any sense, but at least I don’t hold in my anger.”
4. "It's a great lesson about not being too precious about your writing. You have to try your hardest to be at the top of your game and improve every joke you can until the last possible second, and then you have to let it go. You can't be that kid standing at the top of the water slide"
7. “As an improviser, I always find it jarring when I meet someone in real life whose first answer is no. “No, we can’t do that.” “No, that’s not in the budget.” “No, I will not hold your hand for a dollar.” What kind of way is that to live?”
8. “[...] things most people do naturally are often inexplicably difficult for me.”
9. “If you are a woman and you bought this book for practical tips on how to make it in a male-dominated workplace, here they are. No pigtails, no tube tops. Cry sparingly. (Some people say “Never let them see you cry.” I say, if you’re so mad you could just cry, then cry. It terrifies everyone.)”
10. “If you retain nothing else, always remember the most important rule of beauty, which is: who cares?”
Tina Fey...A beautiful writer, honest person, comedic personality, and strong woman. I identify with your awkwardness and am truly a fan. ( I also watched "Baby Mama" when I was way too young, but I guess that was my foreshadowed devotion/ fandom? *shrug*)
