At almost every family meal (especially near special occasions), family and friends are bound to bring up dinner conversation topics, leaving those who attend colleges or even high schools at a loss for words. Luckily, with the final holiday of the 2015 approaching and tons of college students visiting families, questions pertaining to students' lives are only awaiting to happen -- but for the last time this year. From topics regarding relationships to those that intend only to agitate the victim, Christmas Dinner is sure to bring lots of conversation this holiday season.
1. "How's school going?"
Family and friends are bound to ask -- this typical question is brought up at almost every occasion. Remember, that honesty is the best policy. . . even if your semester has been full of tears, exams, and stress, you're an ADULT and everyone makes mistakes.
2. "Why don't you have a boyfriend yet?"
If you happen to be an introvert, then college may not be the perfect place (or time) for you to find the "perfect one" and quite frankly, you're probably way too interested in keeping those grades of yours up and prepared for those final exams, anyways.
3. "What did you say you're majoring in again?" followed by "What're you going to do with THAT?"
Not everyone has their life planned out yet and most college students wait until absolutely necessary to declare their major. Don't be nervous to let your family know that you're not quite sure what you plan to do, yet.
Remember: even seniors in college make drastic changes, resulting in spending a longer amount of time at the university that they're attending.
4. "When are you going to get a job and stop making your parents pay for everything?"
Surprisingly, a large amount of parents and guardians actually INSIST on helping their children through school, even if it's in minimal amounts. However, most tend to forget, thus resulting in this question and while most students work on or off campus to pay towards their debts, they are often left with amounts nearly impossible to pay during their time spent at college.
5. "How are your grades?"
In college settings, grades are personal and may only be viewed and obtained by the student attending the institute. Try mentioning that you have taken some very difficult classes to divert attention from bad grades, and if you're doing well, be confident in telling everyone!
6. "You and *insert name* have been together for awhile now, do you plan on getting married anytime soon?"
Of course, no one has the answer to this question. . . However, much like questions about school, this brought up at almost every family meal especially if you've been with a significant other for awhile.
7. "Is that another tattoo (or piercing)?"
After three tattoos and seven piercings, your parents will continue to ask about your body modifications -- every. . . single. . . time.
8. "Who were those people in your Facebook pictures?"
Almost every adult this day in age has a Facebook account -- even grandma. Be sure to watch what you post or to set different privacy settings for those who may ask questions about them later because your family is dying to know every detail about your life.
9. "Do you have any New Year's resolutions?"
Be careful how you answer this one. . . it may be a trick question. Any incorrect word or inappropriate phrasing may give your family hints about what you've been spending your time doing.
10. "Is there anything you need/want to tell us?"
I have one tip for this question: ABORT MISSION.
