10 Questions College Students Don't Want to Answer On Thanksgiving

We're going to go home for Thanksgiving in a few weeks and your family will have lots of questions for you. This may be one of the first times you've seen your extended family since you started school. Here are ten questions they will most likely ask you that you'll most likely not want to answer, no matter what year of school you're in.

1. How is school going?

How I should answer: "GREAT!" *left eye twitches* And then I talk about all the projects I was assigned over Thanksgiving Break.

How I want to answer: "Good." This question is then followed by a more specific question, that forces us to actually respond better to the question.

2. What classes are you taking?

How I should answer: I tell my family all the classes I'm taking and how I love them all.

How I want to answer: I now have to visualize my Monday, Wednesday, Friday classes and then my Tuesday, Thursday classes and somehow I start to get confused and end up responding with a number instead of my actual class names.

3. How many credits is that?

How I should answer: I just sit there and try to add up the credits until I get a number that sounds accurate.

How I want to answer: "I have no idea. I don't keep track. How should I know? That's my advisor's job to know."

4. What have you been up to lately?

How I should answer: "Well.....*proceeds to talk about how busy I've been.*"

How I want to answer: "Netflix. Trying not to cry. Barely surviving. How about you?"

5. Have you joined any clubs or groups on campus?

How I should answer: "Yes, I'm Secretary of the Psychology Club!"

How I want to answer: "We have clubs on campus?"

6. What is your major?

How I should answer: "I'm majoring in Psychology and minoring in Sociology."

How I want to answer: When someone asked me my major and I told them, "Psychology", they replied with, "That and a dollar will get you a cup of coffee at McDonalds."

Thanks, dad.

7. Didn't you used to be a Social Work major?

How I should answer: "Yes, but I decided to switch, not because I have anything against Social Work which I don't, I love Social Work, but I chose to switch to Psychology because it offers more of what I'm looking for when it comes to my future vocation. It offers a more "one-on-one view" whereas Social Work focuses on the population, and that's not the direction I want to go."

How I want to answer: "Yes. And now I'm not. Next question."

8. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

How I should answer: "Well, I want to be done with getting my Masters in counseling and hopefully married and thinking about starting a family soon and have a good foundation on my job and such."

How I want to answer: "I don't even know where I see myself in the next 5 minutes."

9. How have your grades been this semester?

How I should answer: "Great! I'm doing really well my Psych class. We just wrote this paper about..."

How I want to answer: "I'm sure they're fine..."

10. Do you know what you're doing after you graduate?

How I should answer: "I mean...no."

How I want to answer: "I mean...no."

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
