10 Questions I Have After Seeing The Shallows

Warning, there are spoilers for the movie, "The Shallows" are in this article.

After seeing "The Shallows" with a friend, which you can pretty much figure out how the movie is going to end by watching the two-minute trailer, I had a few questions. While I thought the movie was better than I was expecting it to be, I still would like to know some of the thought processes that the writers had while coming up with this plot.

1. Why does Blake Lively wear so much jewelry to go surfing?

And how did she not lose them? Her rings stay on while surfing, being attacked by a shark, and being thrust around underwater. There’s no way. As far as the earrings go, I guess she just knew she was going to need to do emergency surgery on herself. Still wincing at the thought of that scene.

2. Why would she go to a remote island alone?

And how does she think she can get an Uber to come pick her up? This isn’t Texas, Blake Lively. (Which by the way, is surfing in Texas even a thing?)

3. How did she have such good reception on a desert island?

Blake Lively’s character Skypes her sister, texts her friends and looks at social media of pictures of her mom all while in the middle of nowhere. And there’s not even a buffer while she’s Skyping her family. I find that hard to believe.

4. Why did the drunk guy go back into the water after stealing her stuff?

And why did the shark only bite his leg instead of just eating him whole?

5. How does she survive for 3 days without having any food?

Maybe I just think about food too much, but I’m pretty sure the average person doesn’t have enough strength to defeat a shark after going several hours without having eaten or drank any water. I’m just saying.

6. Why is she floating at the end of the movie?

I’m not a medical professional, but I’m confused why she went unconscious after killing the shark. Maybe it was the impact of it? I think it was more for dramatic effects, which I understand, but I found the reality of that happening unlikely. Although the reality of one person defeating a shark is pretty unlikely.

7. Please tell me she didn’t film this after she had her baby.

If anyone would look good after having a baby, then it would be Blake Lively. But still. Not fair.

8. Why don’t they tell you the name of the island?

When Blake Lively’s character asks someone what the name of the island is, they respond, “I could tell you, but then I’d have to kill you.” Well, OK, then kill me because I need to know. Don’t leave us hanging like that.

9. How the hell is her leg better a year later?

Again, I’m no doctor, but I’m pretty sure they would have had to amputate it after it being so deep and untreated. Also, how did it not get infected? I don’t really think sharp earrings can do the trick. I would have believed it if it were two or three years later, but she was running after a year and that just doesn’t seem believable.

10. How does she still look hot after being attacked by a shark and stranded on a rock for three days?

I know it’s Blake Lively and all, but still. Really?

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
