The Marvel cinematic universe has made a name for itself with its powerful and emotional films. Most of the films are often met with critical acclaim, (Besides the "Fantastic Four" reboot, FOX what was that?!) and have earned themselves an ever growing fan base. This list consists of some of the saddest moments that have occurred thus far in the films, but not in chronological order. Some of the movies mentioned have not found their place in Marvel's timeline ("Spider-Man," come on buddy we need you) but still found their place on this list.
Spoilers ahead, proceed with caution.
10. When Steve Rogers decides to crash the plane into the Arctic to save the people of New York City and says what he believes are his last words to Peggy.
"Captain America:The First Avenger": "I'm gonna need a raincheck on that dance," a single tear slides down cheek.
9. When Loki kills Agent Coulson and Thor witnesses the whole thing but can't do anything about it.
"The Avengers":
Even though, technically, he isn't dead and has his own spin-off TV show to account for it, at the time it was pretty heartbreaking. Mainly because we didn't get a chance to get to know Coulson too much as a character.
8. When Thor risks his life to save everyone.
"Thor."
7. When Quicksilver protects Hawkeye, and ends up losing his life.
"The Avengers Age of Ultron": His final words to Hawkeye being, "You didn't see that coming," makes it even more sob worthy as those were also the first words he said to him.
6. When Groot risks his life to save the Guardians.
"Guardians of The Galaxy": Never have I cried so much over a tree.
5. When Peter accidentally reveals his identity as Spider-Man while trying to save the people on the train and all of the people come together to help him, swearing not to reveal his identity.
"Spider Man 2": "He's just a kid, no older than my son."
4. Gwen Stacey falling to her death and Peter speeding down to save her before he discovers it's already too late.
"The Amazing Spider-Man 2": This moment was one that produced gut-wrenching sobs, mainly because it was so painful to see Peter Parker so distraught.
3. When Tony risks his life taking the bomb out of NY and into the wormhole, almost getting trapped inside of it.
"The Avengers": On his way into it, he tries to reach Pepper, thinking it may be the end for him. She doesn't answer and you can see the look of distraught on Stark's face. This is one of the key scenes that demonstrates Stark's heart, as people often believe he doesn't have one.
2. Bucky and Captain America's final fight scene.
"Captain America:The Winter Soldier": "I'm not gonna fight you, you're my friend," is enough to begin the tears, but as Steve lays there continuing to accept it, the tears erupt into sobs. This scene demonstrates Steve's dedication to the friendship that he and Bucky had established almost 70 years prior, before all of the super hero stuff happened. Even though Bucky has no idea who he is (Winter Soldier experimental stuff, watch the movie if you're unfamiliar with it), Steve refuses to fight him, uttering, "Then finish it, cause I'm with you until the end of the line," the line Bucky once said to him when they were young right as the building explodes and Steve falls into the water.
1. Uncle Ben.
"Spider-Man": This is easily the saddest moment in any Marvel movie, there was no competition whatsoever. Uncle Ben is killed while waiting for Peter outside the library he said he would be at, when he was actually fighting in underground wrestling in an attempt to earn some money to impress MJ. What makes this even more heartbreaking is that the guy who kills Uncle Ben is the same guy who Peter lets run past him even after he sees he has stolen money.
Close contenders:
"Guardians of The Galaxy": Peter Quill's mother's death.
"Spider-Man 3": Harry Osbourne's death.
"Captain America: The Winter Soldier": Nick Fury's "death."
"Thor 2": Loki's "death."
"Avengers: Age of Ultron": Jarvis' death.
"Iron Man 3": Jarvis losing power in the snow.
"Captain America: The First Avenger": Bucky Barnes falling to his "death."
"The Amazing Spider-Man": Captain Stacey's last words to Peter.
"Iron Man 3": Pepper Pott's almost death.
"Iron Man": Professor Yinsen's death.
"Iron Man 3": Tony blowing up all of his suits and throwing his arc reactor into the sea.
