10 New Year's Resolutions That Are More Important Than Losing Weight

As the new year rolls in, many people will resolve to make a new year's resolution to lose weight. Here are 10 things that will improve your life far more than dropping a dress size or two.

1. A resolution to delete a form of social media you use often.

Sounds easy, but it isn't. Social media is something that most of us use at some point during the day, if not at many points. You may value the time you spend figuring out what your high school friends are up to, but would you if you realized just how much time you spend doing that? Free up your time by dedicating less to social media.

2. A resolution to read more novels and fewer celebrity headlines.

Although we can mutually agree that Kim Kardashian's new baby is adorable, does that mean that that's all we should care about? What's that book you've been wanting to read? Yeah, you should go read that.

3. A resolution to spend more time engaged.

This means less time with your face glued to your phone and more time with your friends and family. This means phones all in the middle during dinner time and not taking time away from the moments that matter to document them.

4. A resolution to be more outgoing.

Tired of being shy? Ever wanted to speak to someone you didn't know but never knew how? Now's your time to learn.

5. A resolution to save more money.

Here is something we could all work on. Tired of blowing through money at the bar? Make a budget and stop exceeding it. You'll be surprised how much money you'll have by this time next year.

6. A resolution to cut out that toxic person in your life.

Tired of being hurt or disappointed? Stop giving energy to those who do not deserve it. Cut out that negative energy in your life once and for all and become an undeniably happier person.

7. A resolution to do something for the first time.

When's the last time you did something for the first time? Go do that.

8. A resolution to call your mother more.

Your mom misses you even if she doesn't say it. Call her more. You'd be surprised how much you didn't realize exactly how much you needed her after all, even when it feels like you've got it all figured out.

9. A resolution to give back.

Got some extra time to spare? Give it back to someone who needs it. Whether it's helping a friend with a subject they're struggling with or volunteering somewhere, get out and give back and see how much your perspective improves.

10. A resolution to live with intent.

Don't like how the last year of your life has gone? Change it. Realize that half of the battles you have could be won by living with intent. Don't like your major? Change it. Tired of being broke? Get a job and start saving. Want to be more adventurous? Do something out of the ordinary. It all starts with you and the intent you wake up with every day.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
