This time of year is dreaded by dancers. No matter if you're performing the annual Nutcracker show or presenting new work, show week can become hell week in an instant. Tech, dress, and finally performances take up most of the day, leaving other necessities by the wayside. Fear not! I am here to remind you the top 10 necessities for show week.
1. Sleep
I know this is cliche, but sleep is NOT for the weak. You need it to be prepared for anything that comes- from hours of tech to difficult partnering.
2. Food
My favorite! I know that food is not always welcome in dressing rooms, and bathroom breaks are not favorable during rehearsals. However, food is your energy! Munch on a couple almonds during long hours, and eat a piece of fruit on breaks. Trust me, your body will thank you.
3. Distractions
Hear me out: you can't focus on one thing forever. You need to focus on something in the moment while performing, but you shouldn't obsess over any one thing. A small distraction allows you to come back and look at a movement with fresh eyes, maybe even showing you something you didn't see before!
4. Mental Strength
This one is also pretty simple. Any performance requires nerves of steel, and your mind needs to be on par. A healthy outlook is necessary: it allows you to compartmentalize, analyze strengths and weaknesses and congratulate yourself on a job well done!
5. Peer Support
This goes along with your mental health: if your peers/fellow performers are around you, allow for mutual support! This also provides for good comradery on stage, and a better performance from both you and the people around you!
6. Meditation Breaks
Along with breaks for distractions, meditation breaks are also pretty helpful. They center you, connecting you to all of your body. They allow you to clear your mind for a clear performance!
7. Layers
Clothing may be optional during a dance, but off stage, layer it up! This keeps muscles warm, allowing smoother operation during the actual performance. Moving on cold muscles can lead to injuries!
8. Communication
Not only is communication between performers important, but also communication between you and the choreographer, as well as between you and other managers/ stage hands. You'll be in the know about any schedule change, any performance change, or anything that you should/shouldn't do.
9. Meds
YAY Vitamins. Or Ibprophen. Medications during show week are a must! Anti-inflammatories and muscle relaxants keep your body in tip-top shape- just don't OD!!
10. A Reminder To Never Forget That You Love This
Not corny or sarcastic: just have fun, you'll do great!
