Let me begin by saying this: if you haven't seen "Finding Dory," you need to. Thirteen years after the original movie "Finding Nemo," "Finding Dory" splashed into theaters just as many millennials were preparing to leave for college. Well played, Disney/Pixar, well played. This movie is fantastic in its own merits, but when us graduated seniors (or anyone soon to be leaving home) experience the film, it reveals something far more than finding your way home. The movie has ten fundamental lessons that all of us need to carry as we go forward in life to find our destiny. (See the movie, then you'll get it.)
1. No matter where you are, remember who you are.
It is so important for us to hold dear all the things that make us different. Whether it's your short term memory loss or your awesome sense of humor, embrace it! Those things are what make you unique; we should all treasure those qualities.
2. Make some new friends.
Remember that you are not the only one leaving home for the first time. No matter where you are, you can find someone who is in that same predicament. Yes, you may have to get out of your comfort zone to meet that friend, but it will be well worth it.
3. Don't worry too much about what other people think.
Do you! Other people will love you for being your true self. You could even inspire others to embrace their own truth as well. Speak whale and watch other people start speaking whale, too.
4. Ask for help when you need it.
People are always willing to help. Sometimes it's just about finding the right person to help. If you are ever in need of assistance, don't be afraid to ask someone around you to lead you in the right direction.
5. Try new things.
One of the best things about leaving home are all the new things you get to experience! Don't force yourself to do anything you're not comfortable with, but at the same time don't immediately write things off. The saying is "a new thing a day keeps the doctor away," right?
6. Stand up for yourself.
Never let anyone degrade you! You have every right to call someone out if you notice them taking advantage of you and what you have to offer. Don't feel ashamed to stand up for yourself.
7. Call your parents.
Sure, this whole leaving home thing is hard for you, but what about your parents. They have been taking care of you every single day for the past 18 years, and now you're gone! It will never be uncool to call your mom. Make her a priority.
8. Hugs are always a good thing.
Everyone could use a little TLC! It is beneficial to both parties; just a single hug can boost serotonin levels to create happiness and a mood boost.
9. Don't forget your way home.
Possibly the cheesiest life lesson, but without a doubt a substantial one: don't forget your roots, and make sure to stay in touch with them.
And, the one we've all been waiting for...
10. Just keep swimming!
Life is good! The ups and downs make it fun! And now I leave you with the cutest picture ever:
