Grey's Anatomy makes you want to become a surgeon. Watching the series again for your fourth time makes you think you can perform any surgery if it's necessary. "Push 1 of Epi. Start compression's. Charge to 300. Clear." Those terms are familiar in every episode. Actually, this series made me realize I wanted to pursue a career in the nursing field with a focus in Pediatric Oncology. I fell in love with everything about the medical field and I couldn't be happier with the major I chose. Not only is Grey's Anatomy full of love, drama and trauma, you learn more life lessons than you think.
1. Be a shark when it comes to your goals
Rule #1 in life: You need to be a shark. In a competitive world, you don't have many friends and being nice won't get you far. If you're fighting for a position you want, being nice is the last thing on your list. You need to knock people out of the race in order to be number one.
2. Your person doesn't have to be your significant other
Your "person" is the one who is with you through everything and anything. Whether you're in a relationship or married, your best friend is still there to listen to your problems. He/ She will be there to help you drag a corpse across the living room floor if you murdered someone. I'm hoping something like that doesn't happen, but you get what I'm saying. Everybody needs somebody.
3. Life is a b*tch sometimes
Sometimes, life just doesn't go your way. One week you think you finally have your life together, and the next it's falling apart. In college, for example, it could feel like you're failing eight classes even though you're only taking five. Life has a way of playing jokes on us. It's like one big LOL, except no one is laughing.
4. Everyone deserves the truth
Yes, the truth can be painful, but sometimes you just need to hear it. You can only go so far with telling someone the truth though. In other words, don't try to point out their flaws and make them feel like a terrible person in the process. As a friend, just keep them aware of the things they're doing and help them with what they're doing wrong.
5. Growing up happens whether you like it or not
Growing up is inevitable. Being an adult is awful. When I was little, I used to think people in their 20's had their life together. Now that I'm 20, I realize I'm still trying to figure out life and myself. As Ellis Grey says, "The carousel never stops turning. You can't get off." The more you think about it, the scarier it can get. I didn't know being an adult would be this hard until I became one.
6. It's okay to be scared
It's OK to be scared. It can be a good thing. It means you have something to lose. If you're scared of losing a person in a friendship or relationship, it means you care. Just don't be scared all the time because you won't enjoy the beauty someone can give. "You gotta wonder why we cling to our expectations. Because the expected is just what keeps us steady… standing… still. The expected is just the beginning. The unexpected… is what changes our lives."
7. Change is everything
Change can be a good thing, when it is for the better. Having a change of scenery, lifestyle or crowd will help you to grow as a person. Sometimes, if things don't change, they will stay the same. Change helps things progress, and like I said, without change you won't get anywhere. A person can change to achieve their goals and that's OK. As Meredith Grey says, "We spend our whole lives worrying about the future, planning for the future, trying to predict the future. As if figuring it out will somehow cushion the blow. But the future is always changing. The future is the home of our deepest fears and our wildest hopes. But one thing is certain: When it finally reveals itself, the future is never the way we imagined it."
8. Love is never simple
9. We learn how to move on
10. Make no apologies for being yourself
Be yourself and be happy doing the things you love. That's all I have to say. If you love dancing in your underwear listening to music, so be it. Make no apologies for being the person you are. Your happiness is all that matters when it comes to yourself.
