I recently celebrated a birthday which opened up a new chapter in my youth: my 20s. After being alive for two full decades, I have experienced a number of ups, downs and in-betweens all related to growing up. Through it all I learned a number of lessons I've found important to keep in mind at all times.

1. Change is good.

Sometimes people and places are temporary. That's OK. The ones that are meant to physically stick around will, and the rest will live in your memory forever.

2. You're not as bad as you think you are.

This goes for social status, physical appearance, those moments when you feel guilty about things that are out of your control, or anything else that pertains to the reason your confidence is lacking. Forget about it. Realistically, in life and in everyone else's eyes, you are doing just fine.

3. Don't forget to appreciate the people who love you.

Friends, family, boy/girlfriends, they're all very special. They're the foundation of your happiness, and if you can not imagine your life without them, don't ever give them a reason to leave or lose respect for you. That being said...

4. Not everyone is going to like you.

Some people will adore you with their whole heart and some people would rather not be around you. Sometimes, they will have good reason and sometimes no reason at all. That's normal, and that's OK.

5. Sometime's you'll fall flat on your face.

Some days you'll want to break down and give up. Some days you'll miss people or places you shouldn't. This is all part of the growing process, and usually it's the darkest part of the night right before the dawn.

6. As long as you want to, you'll always get back on your feet.

If you promise yourself it can happen, it will happen. Make it happen. Take care of yourself - mentally and physically.

7. Balance is important.

The good will get you through the bad and the bad will help you appreciate the good. Balance work and play appropriately, and every part of your life will be better.

8. It's crucial to take risks.

If you don't live outside of your comfort zone, growth is impossible. Make (responsible) impulsive decisions, and you'll eventually become the person you aspire to be.

9. You're never alone.

Don't ever forget it.

10. Don't take everything too seriously.

Think of life as a roller coaster. Some are more scared of it than others, but we're all on it and it only lasts for so long, so you might as well enjoy the ride. Keep whoever or whatever makes you happy close by, and keep your warm memories close to your heart.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
