This may come as a shock to people that know me, but it’s about time I came clean. I have been involved in a 15-year love affair with John Mayer. It started the summer before my freshman year in high school and had burned like an eternal flame ever since. Our relationship hasn’t been easy, let me tell you.

That stupid Playboy interview caused a substantial amount of grief between my sister and I; she was team “John Mayer is racist” and I was team “John Mayer was trying to be witty and failed.” I mean come on, “My Stupid Mouth” is a song about him always saying the wrong thing and wishing he could take it back. Seven years later the air is still salty between my sister and I on the topic of Mr. Mayer as a person, but we can agree that his lyrics are gold and reach deep down into the souls of his socially awkward, angst, and anxiety filled fans.

John Mayer is a lyrical genius that is rarely seen in today’s music industry, and I have 10 John Mayer lyrics to prove it:

1. "So the good boys and girls take the so called right track. Faded white hats. Grabbing credits. Maybe transfers; they read all the books but they can't find the answers" (No Such Thing- Rooms for Squares).

This lyric was the first time that I realized that despite what I’d always been told, going to college, and getting a degree weren’t going to make my life any easier and that happiness wasn't guaranteed to anyone.

2."Friday evening, we've been drinking 2 AM, I swear I might propose but we close the tab split a cab and call each other up when we get home falling asleep to the sound of sirens" (City Love- Room For Squares)

Admittedly this lyric isn’t particularly swoon worthy on its own, but the fact that Mayer sings “falling asleep to the sound of sirens” in the same way that Simon and Garfunkel sing “Sounds of Silence”, is enough to give a true music lover chills.

3. "-You can be mad in the morning. Or the afternoon instead. But don't leave me 98 and 6 degrees of separation from you baby.Come back to bed." (Come Back to Bed-Heavier Things)

Come Back to Bed is a great bluesy ballad about the typical come back to bed fight that every couple has at least once in their relationship. The lyrical magic here lies in the phrase “98 and 6 degrees of separation”.The average human body temperature is 98.6 degrees. There is also the idea of everyone in the world being connected by six or fewer

people called “six degrees of separation.” Mayer cleverly combines to the two into a heart melting plea for his lover to come back to him. They probably were fighting over something stupid he said, which leads us to number four.

4."One more thing. Why is it my fault? So maybe I try too hard. But it's all because of this desire, Just wanna be liked,Just wanna be funny.Looks like the joke's on me,So call me "Captain Backfire" (My Stupid Mouth- Room For Squares)

The beauty behind these lyrics are their pure honesty. We’ve all had moment where we try way too hard to impress someone we like. Typically, we end up looking like idiots and wishing we could either have a redo or completely erasing that moment from all existence. It was these very lyrics that made me able to overlook the racist comments John made in Playboy. Were his comments completely inappropriate? Absolutely! Do I think he was trying to answer basic questions cleverly and failed miserably? Absolutely! But one of the hazards of being a wordsmith, is you feel like people always expect you to say something witty or incredibly insightful, and occasionally you fail.

5. "Now if we had the power to bring our neighbors home from war, they would have never missed a Christmas. No more ribbons on their door. And when you trust your television, what you get is what you got. Cause when they own the information, oh they can bend it all they want. That's why we're waiting. Waiting on the world to change." (Waiting on The World to Change- Continuum)

Here is a perfect example of Mayer succeeding at being insightful. The song lyrics were powerful in 2006 when the song was originally released; now 11 years later, the lyrics are especially poignant, since the President of the United States and his admiration like to feed the country “alternative facts”.

6."Maybe I'll tangle in the power lines. And it might be over in a second's time. But I'll gladly go down in a flame, if the flame's what it takes to remember my name." (Bigger Than My Body- Heavier Things)

This song should speak to anyone who knows they are meant to be so much more than they are currently. Take me for example, I am 29 and work for a company that people spend years trying to get hired at and have traveled to different places. I’m living some peoples’ dreams life, but often I feel like a complete failure, because I know I’m meant to do so much more. Bigger Than My Body is a song for all the people like me that must stifle their passion for a nine to five to make ends meet and explore their passions on their off time.

7. "On behalf of every man looking out for every girl, you are the god and the weight of her world. So fathers, be good to your daughters. Daughters will love like you do." (Daughters- Heavier Things)

I love this song because I am one of the few women in my generation that doesn’t have “Daddy issues”. My father has always been a part of my life and therefore I love others the way he loves me. Although this song is called “Daughters,” its message to men is that they must set positive examples for their daughters because their little girls will most

likely pattern themselves after the examples set by their fathers, and their mothers too.

8. "I'm dizzy from the shopping malls. I searched for joy, but I bought it all. It doesn't help the hunger pains and a thirst I'd have to drown first to ever satiate." (Something's Missing- Heavier Things)

First off, mad props to John for using “satiate” so casually. Secondly, the song addresses the problem with materialism. We live in a world where people look to possessions to fill a void in their lives, and while the shopping high temporarily dulls the pain, that high eventually fades away. Then you’re left with that empty feeling that you’re too afraid to explore, so you go out and buy more.

9. "It's not a silly little moment, it's not the storm before the calm. This is the deep and dying breath of this love that we've been working on." (Slow Dancing in a Burning Room- Continuum)

Honestly just listening to this song gives me goosebumps. “This is the deep and dying breath of this love that we’ve been working on.” COME ON!! This lyric is romantic, pathetic, and heartbreaking all at once. The thought of two people being so stubborn that they would rather let the room they are in go up in flames with them in it, instead of ending a bad relationship, is frightening, yet ridiculously common. It’s alarming the amount of people I know who would rather be completely unhappy in a relationship than be alone. This song is definitely for these types of people.

10. "I'm so alive. I'm so enlightened. I can barely survive a night in my mind." (New Deep -Heavier Things)

If this song isn’t an anthem for intelligent people with some form of anxiety and/or depression issue, it needs to be. Have you ever encountered a extremely smart person and said “Man you’re always such a downer,” or better yet have you had that phrase said to you? If you answered yes to either of those questions, then you should really listen to and internalize the words of this song.It tries to explain how hard it is to have certain expectations of the world and yourself and to be let down repeatedly. They say, “ignorance is bliss” and John is suggesting numbness as the new form of ignorance.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
