Nothing restores faith in true love like heart-warming stories of how couples first met. In a day and age in which technology is ever present, even in the dating scene, it's nice to hear of the unique ways that couples have met face-to-face. Here are 10 "How We Met" stories that I obtained from various friends and family members through interviews over the phone and via Facebook.
1. The Man With the White Corvette
“I was 19 years old and working as a hostess at a restaurant called the Rusty Scupper. After I got off from work, I decided to go into the bar for a drink. This guy came up to me and we started talking. We were in the bar maybe for an hour, and he ended up walking me out to my car.
He had asked me where I parked, and I told him that I was in the lot right up top. As we were walking, I asked him if he owned a white Corvette. He said yes—looking confused because he realized he did not park close to the restaurant. ‘How did you know that,’ he asked. I replied, ‘Ah, I just took a guess.’
I had always had dreams where I would marry an Italian man who drove a white corvette. My dream came true. We will be married 34 years in May.”
-Caryl, age 55
2. Love at First Song
“I met my boyfriend walking into the entrance of the Firefly Music Festival. We went to see Modest Mouse and “Float On” came on and we both started singing really loudly and he put me on his shoulders.”
-Marissa, age 20
3."Once" Upon A Time...
“The weekend after my senior prom instead of going down the shore, I decided to go into the city with my friend. We wanted to go see the show “Once” and we were standing in line when three guys in suits were standing behind us. Somehow we started talking to them, and we found out that they were from Louisiana and it was their first time in New York City.
We ended up spending the whole day with them. I immediately liked Jake but I never in a million years thought anything would come out of it. After that day, we just talked as friends for months…we both had an idea of how we felt but were so scared to tell each other because of the distance. Finally, he told me his feelings and ended up coming to New Jersey in July and ever since, we’ve been dating.
It’s hard being long distance and not being able to see each other as much as we want to, but we’ve been dating for over three years now!"
-Caitlin, age 21
4. Camera Shy
"We first met at NJIT seven years ago. We were both a little flustered standing outside the architecture building waiting for our teacher to arrive on the first day of photography class.
We instantly connected and became friends on the very first day of class. Neither one of us hinted to the other that we liked each other because the timing was always off, either him or I would have a partner during the semesters. But we never gave up on our friendship even after we graduated.
We found each other again when the timing was right and we've never been apart since."
-Candice, age 25
5. Confidence Boost
“We went to high school together. She was a sophomore when I was a senior. And I always found her insanely attractive but wasn't confident enough at that time to confront her. One of my best buds had a younger sister who was Lauren's age, and I knew that Lauren was sleeping over his girlfriends house one night, so I convinced my bud we should do something that same night, knowing it would lead to seeing Lauren.
The night we hung out it ended up being the four of us, and we really hit it off; there was clearly some kind of connection there...I thought she was beautiful and easy to be around, and she thought I was just an older guy with a license and would be great for her reputation.
We started dating and after awhile she began to fall for me. We've been dating for 11 years, and got married this past August."
-Jake, age 28
6. The Boy Next Door
“I moved onto his [Paul’s] street when I was 8, so I’ve known him since then. He lives two houses down from me, so we basically use to ‘play’ together when we were younger with the other neighbors, and then we got older and obviously stopped.
It wasn’t until my junior year and his senior year that I was like OH he’s cute! He didn’t really give me the time of day in the beginning…I realized he was just shy. So eventually we started to talk and he would walk me home at night and joke that we only live ‘48 paces away’. He never even asked me out technically either; he basically told his mom that I was his girlfriend before he even told me. But it’ll be four years in November and I’m still as happy as ever."
-Tori, age 20
7. Dancing Into Her Heart
"So Jenette’s cousins had been coming to Woodloch [a vacation spot in Pennsylvania] for over 20 years. Jenette and her mom finally decided to take the trip up six years ago…in the summer.
Jenette and I did not meet until her last night at Woodloch. It was our outdoor concert where I was the MC and I was dressed in a grass skirt! Woodloch had a Jimmy Buffet cover band and the “dollar wine” song came on, which is kind of like a line dance song. I remember seeing her all night and wanting to talk to her. When that song came on, I challenged her to a dance off. I distinctly remember her amazing smile and beautiful eyes.
We ended up dancing all night. We exchanged numbers…I remember when she left, I felt a strange connection with her.
We married on September 9, 2012."
-Patrick, age 30
8. A Text Message Gone...Right?
“My junior year I was the treasurer of the criminology honor society at The College of New Jersey and my [now] boyfriend Ryan, who was a senior, was the president. My sister, Elyssa was visiting me one weekend to come to a sorority mixer and texted me asking what the plan was and what to wear while I was at rugby practice.
We had a water break so I checked my phone really fast and saw her text, but Ryan also texted me asking me to write a check for national dues. I accidently texted him back instead of Elyssa, telling him that I was going to wear a lace shirt, high waisted skirt, and heels tonight.
At the end of practice, I checked my phone and had another text from Ryan that just said ‘wrong text dude’. I was mortified… I didn’t even answer him. That night I was walking into my house after the party and he texted me something funny like ‘how’d those heels work out for you’.
And we never stopped talking after that. At the end of October, we will be dating for four years.”
-Danielle, age 24
9. Red, White, and Love
"So, basically, three years ago, Jasper and I met at the sleep away camp that we had gone to as children. We spent only three weeks together at camp, but we were constantly together.
After Jasper and I dated long distance for a year, I graduated high school and he joined the army. A year later, after countless trips back and forth from Jersey to Hawaii, he proposed to me.
Jasper now has about a year left in the army, and we are planning our wedding for after I graduate college. I can't imagine my life being any different than it is now, and honestly could not be more blessed to have found a love like this at such a young age."
-Taylor, age 20
10. Parallel Lives
"I first met Robert when I was 29 and quickly approaching 30 in December 2012.
I was on probably the worst dating site known to man. Its the kind of site where you are essentially meeting the person that will cut you up and put you in a trunk of a car. Robert's profile said he was in New York (I soon learned he was not in New York but rather in the process of moving to New York; he was actually in Miami) and it somehow came up under my matches.
I learned that his dad recently died of lung cancer and I had (at that point) been an oncology nurse for seven years. He quit his job in the last year or so of his dad's life to take care of him and his dad was his entire life. I spend my entire life caring for people who are living with cancer. We were living parallel lives.
The rest is pretty much history, we got engaged less than a year and a half after we started dating (Robert moved to New Jersey) and we got married nine days short of a year since the engagement. Four and a half months later, we are still married!"
-Wendy, age 32
