Between all the adventures and inside jokes and laughter and consoling and screenshots, sometimes we forget to thank the friends that we have in our lives. Each friend is a precious gem, but they're not all the same, and thank god for that. You need variety to keep things interesting, and because sometimes you need a hug but other times you need a good reality check.
So because it can never be said enough...
Thank You to the friend who...
1. Is not afraid to give you tough love.
Sometimes in life we need a reality check. We need someone to lay the love on a little tough to keep us true to ourselves, to keep up on the right path and to keep us from texting that ex. They don't usually say what we want to hear but it's because they love us enough to be the only ones to tell us what we need to hear.
2. Is always prepared with a pep talk.
They somehow are always channeling that football coach in any football movie ever and Mr. Schuester. They always know how to lift us up, motivate us and inspire us again. We all get down on ourselves and it's just really nice to have someone who is able to pump us up for whatever it is we have to do.
3. Is always up for an adventure.
Even if that "adventure" is going to get pancakes at 3 am or pick up milk. They are always down to get in the car, no matter the destination. Planned or spontaneous you can always count on them on to be your co-pilot in life. We appreciate them because adventures, big or small, are lonely by yourself.
4. Is really good at giving you just the right advice.
Sometimes it's because they've made every mistake in the book or have a life chalk full of experiences or sometimes it's just because they're really, really smart but no matter what you're bringing to them, they know just what to say. From cheering up to encouragement to life advice to advice on how to adult, they usually know what's up and don't judge you for asking questions.
5. Knows the perfect cocktail for any kind of occasion.
And, more importantly, is ready and willing to drink your problems away or celebrate the biggest and smallest of victories. Some friends would judge you for wanting to celebrate getting a 90 with a whole bottle of wine and some friends will tell you that the way to cure a broken heart is not going to be found at the bottom of a bottle of vodka (but you should check, anyway.) This friend is judgement-free zone and probably has at least 3 new drinks you haven't tried yet.
6. isn't there physically but is still there.
Because life has a tendency to bring wonderful humans in your life and then move them 854 miles away. Through screenshots, FaceTime / Skype calls and 4 hour long phone calls, they have your back. And, when you do see them again, it'll be like you saw each other yesterday. It's hard to have them so far away, but it doesn't mean they're there for you any less.
7. Is always ready with a joke or funny story to make you laugh.
We all have that one "class clown" friend, someone who is ready with a joke or a story or some funny antic to make you laugh. It doesn't matter how sad you are, they'll have you crying from laughter and stomaches shortly. You can bust out your ugliest laugh with them because they're going to get it out of you sooner or later.
8. Isn't afraid to be weird with you, or be seen with your weird self in public.
No matter how serious life gets, you need at least one friend you can be silly with. Walt Disney said, "growing old is mandatory, but growing up is optional," and created a world where our inner child can be let loose. However, you don't need to be at Walt Disney World to let your freak flag fly, and this friend will love you anyway and may even join you.
9. Silence isn't awkward with.
There comes a time in close friendships that you realize neither one of you have talked in the last 15 minutes and it wasn't because you were frantically thinking of something to say. In fact, you barely noticed it at all. You become so comfortable with one another that silence is no longer awkward, and that's so appreciated.
10. Is low maintenance.
Wanna wear sweats and binge Parks and Rec? They're down. Wanna stay in Friday night instead of hitting the club? They're didn't know what they were gonna wear anyway. Life swamps you with work or school and 100 other things to do? You don't have to text this friend every day and nothing is going to change. As we grow up we learn how important this really is.
You can never tell someone you love them enough, and we don't hear "thank you" as much as any of us should. Let your friends know you appreciate them.
