It's your first year of college; you're nervous and overwhelmed that you're finally on your own. Freshman year is going to be one of the best of your life. It's the time where you meet your best friends and make memories. It also will be full of mistakes, so here are some that you're probably going to make.

1. Overpacking

When you're first starting off at school, you pack as if you're going into space for years. Half of the things you'll never pull out of the box.

2. Buying all of your textbooks before classes start

The first year we spend hundreds of dollars on books, and some you will never even crack open.

3. Locking yourself out of your dorm room

After you forget your keys at least once a week, you learn ways to wear your room key as an accessory so that you can avoid an awkward night trying to act sober in front of your RAs.

4. Calling your parents all the time

It's natural to miss home, but your parents don't need a call to talk about what you had for dinner that day.

5. Taking Snapchat stories that are minutes long

There will be nights that you don't remember. But unfortunately for you, it's all recorded on Snapchat for you to relive in the morning.

6. Ruining your laundry

Don't wash your favorite shirt. Wear it until you can't anymore and then take it home so that your mom can clean it for you. It's safer that way.

7. Taking too many classes

Overloading our schedules is easy to do when we don't know what you're getting into, but it's always OK to drop a class.

8. Not going to the gym

The freshman 15 is an actual thing, and you'll be thankful that you took care of yourself once you come home.

9. Signing up for every club

You're not going to participate in every club you sign up for, and if you're not selective, you'll be receiving emails from them for your entire college career.

10. Stressing out

Your first year of college is going to be stressful, but just take a breath and enjoy it because your time in college will go by so fast. By the time you realize it, you'll be graduating and starting to make more mistakes in the real world.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.
