Growing up smack-dab in the middle of the country prepared me very well for tornados. When the sky turns green, turn on the TV and cross your fingers that you don't actually have to retreat to the basement.
Somehow I missed the magnitude at which hurricanes wreak havoc to the entire East Coast once they build up momentum. I couldn't believe that the incessant clouds and rain were truly a product of a hurricane, but the more I protested, the more people questioned my normalcy: "This is your first hurricane?!" So here are the most common questions as Joaquin headed our way.
1. It's pronounced "JOE-Uh-kinn," right? Or is it "Jay-KWan?"

Joaquin never made landfall in the United States. Instead, it headed toward the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and later died.
