We have come to that time of year: Christmas season. There are lights everywhere, most people are in a good mood and music is playing in every store and home. Here are my favorite 10 songs for the wonderful Christmas season.
1. "White Christmas" -- Bing Crosby
I'm a little biased here because I'm a huge fan of the movie, but there is nothing quite like hearing this classic Christmas song. The description of a perfect Christmas day with everything covered in glittering snow creates such a beautiful image in your mind. There is nothing quite like it.
2. "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer" -- Elmo and Patsy
This song is just too much fun. Yes it's a little wacky, but that's really the charm of it.
3. "Do You Hear What I Hear?" -- Various
Originally written by a married couple as a plea for peace during the Cuban Missile Crisis, this Christmas song became an almost instant classic. It's a song that has now been covered by numerous people including Carrie Underwood, Bing Crosby and Kenny G. The lyrics of this song are what really make it so good. The idea of people listening to one another to make the world better is great to hear.
4. "Wonderful Christmas Time" -- Paul McCartney
This is another one of those zany Christmas songs. Released at the beginning of the '80s, this song combines all the elements about the '70s and '80s for that distinct sound. Despite being so specific to it's era, this song is still incredibly popular today.
5. "Sleigh Ride" -- Various
Another song that has lasted for years is "Sleigh Ride." Originally, it was an instrumental piece written by famous composer Leroy Anderson. Now it has taken on several forms including a popular vocal cover by Ella Fitzgerald. You are sure to hear this piece played by your local orchestra sometime during this Christmas season. I'm sorry second violins, I know those off beats suck.
6. "All I Want for Christmas Is You" -- Mariah Carey
You have probably heard this song at least once already. Everyone tries to sing it, even when they shouldn't. It's always easy to pick out that high flying chorus. I have a feeling this song will never go away now.
7. "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" -- Andy Williams
This is a song that has also been covered by several different artists, but the most recognizable version is the original by Andy Williams. It is a feel-good song that makes you just want it to be Christmas. Its lyrics transport you to that perfect little town during Christmas. Who doesn't want to be there?
8. "Last Christmas" -- Wham!
I seem to really have a particular enjoyment for 80's Christmas songs. I love the story behind this song of caring about someone so much that you have them your heart. Sure, it doesn't end particularly happy, but it makes for a great tune.
9. "Blue Christmas" -- Elvis Presley
I would be crazy not to include at least one of Elvis' Christmas songs, and this has to be the one. It's a classic as the King of Rock and Roll describes how lonely his Christmas will be without you. It's always nice to hear a song that sounds like it's being sung to you.
10. "O Holy Night" -- Various
Once again, this has been a song done by several different artists. It's a beautiful song that details the birth of Jesus Christ. I"m not usually a huge fan of religious Christmas songs, but this one is different. There is just something about this song that leaves you in awe. There's none quite like it.
Well, there you have it, 10 of my absolute favorite Christmas songs. I hope you enjoy some of these as well. Enjoy the Christmas season and the wonderful music that is all around.
