Most of us probably think we have a fairly accurate idea of when certain events happened throughout world history. It seems obvious that certain events happened before others, but what if this turned out to be false? What if what we think of as two completely separate time periods were actually closer together than we ever thought? There are quite a few people, organizations, inventions, and more that are much younger or older than most people assume. Here are some mind-boggling historical facts that may make you take a step back rethink your knowledge of the past!
1. Oxford University was founded before the beginning of the Aztec civilization.
The University of Oxford was founded in 1096, while Tenochtitlán wasn't built until 1325.
2. When people were still traveling on the Oregon Trail, the fax machine was invented.
3. France was still using the guillotine for executions when the original Star Wars film premiered.
The last execution by guillotine in France was for Hamida Djandoubi in September of 1977, and the first Star Wars film premiered in May of that same year.
4. The first Warner Bros. theater opened while the Ottoman Empire was still in existence.
The Warner Brothers opened their first movie theater in 1903, but the Ottoman Empire didn't end until 1922.
5. Harvard University was founded before calculus.
The Ivy League university was founded in 1636, and calculus was invented in the late 17th century.
6. The last time the Chicago Cubs won the World Series, women did not have the right to vote.
The Cubs won the World Series most recently in 1908, and the 19th Amendment allowing women to vote wasn't ratified until 12 years later in 1920.
7. Cleopatra lived closer to the invention of the iPhone than the building of the Great Pyramids.
The Great Pyramids are believed to have been completed at around 2550 BC, and Cleopatra was born 2481 years later in 69 BC. The first iPhone was released in 2007 AD, only 2076 years after Cleopatra's birth.
8. Martin Luther King Jr., Anne Frank, and Audrey Hepburn were all born in the same year.
King was born on January 15, Anne Frank was born on June 12, and Audrey Hepburn was born on May 4, all three in 1929.
9. Tiffany & Co. has been around longer than Italy has been a country.
The famous jewelry company has been around since it was founded in New York in 1837, but Italy wasn't officially a sovereign nation until 1861.
10. John Tyler, the 10th President of the United States, has 2 living grandsons.
President John Tyler was born in 1790, but he had a son when he was 63, and that son had a son when he was 75. The president's two grandsons, Harrison (pictured left) and Lyon (pictured right) are 87 and 91, respectively.
