10 Essential Tips For Incoming Freshman At The University of Arizona

After being a proud student of the University of Arizona for two years now, I can confidently say I go to the best University in the entire world. The U of A offers its students an authentic “college experience.” My best friend in the entire world, who also happens to be my little sister just graduated high school last week and about two months ago made one of the best decisions of her entire life by committing to attend the U of A. As summer grows closer and closer to an end I’ve decided to give her some tips and tricks to getting the hang of the U of A and college itself from my personal experience freshman year!

1. Don’t overpack!

Okay little sis, I know you love your wardrobe just as much as I do but living in dorm life means dealing with tiny spaces. Pack by seasons; Arizona is generally hot most of the year, but when you go home for Christmas break make sure you bring back some boots and sweaters for those colder months.

2. Go crazy on the decor, but not on the “knick-knacks.”

Spicing up a boring dorm room with wall decor and a cuddly comforter and pillows will make your space feel like home, but there is absolutely no room for the little trinkets you could do without. Dorm life is all about bringing the bare minimum.

3. During monsoon season, wear flip flops!

Seriously, the streets of Tucson flood ankle high, anything other than flip flops will leave your feet wet the entire class; its too hot for rain boots!

4. Yes, meal plan does work at Starbucks on campus!

Refuel at the bookstore and library Starbucks on your meal plan, which basically means free coffee, yay!

5. Use Tapingo!

This handy dandy app means you can order your food (on your meal plan) from almost anywhere on campus and it will be ready for you as soon as you arrive. Ditch those lines and don’t be late to class!

6. Take your notes on your computer!

Although computers can be a little distracting in class, it's so much easier to stay organized when you have all your notes in one place. Plus you can type faster than you can write, you will never lose them, and you can send them off to friends. Don’t forget to back up your documents!

7. Use SafeRide.

Although at times it takes a little while for your ride to get there, SafeRide on week days is the perfect way to get home from late nights in the Library. Just call the SafeRide number on any weekday and get home safe and sound for free.

8. Get a refillable water bottle and use it!

It's HOT in Arizona and you will get dehydrated, trust me so make sure you’re keeping track of your daily water intake and making it a priority during your day to be drinking a little extra water than usual.

9. Use “RateMyProfessor” when looking for general education classes.

This is a website where professors and their classes have been rated by students who have taken them already. This can help and make sure you are giving yourself the best opportunity to do well in your classes.

10. Join Greek Life!

The U of A is a huge greek life community and being part of it gives students purpose and family! Don’t forget to sign up for recruitment! :)

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
