10 Encouraging Lessons While Discovering Yourself in College

College is a new chapter in life where you begin to unravel who you are. At 21-years-old, I believed I was supposed to have every plan figured out. Along the trials and tribulations, there were some personal lessons that experience taught me along the way.

1. Don't be afraid in getting to know people. Opening up yourself to people with different backgrounds can bring something exciting to the table. People don't bite, and there is much more than meets the eye.

2. Step outside your comfort zone. I know it sounds cliche, but actually taking the step is a rewarding process for yourself. Whether it comes to speaking up, talking to someone new, or branching out to new activities, you never know what doors could open.

3.Don’t be afraid to be yourself around others. You never know who could appreciate the person you are. There are so many different personalities in the world..Just because yours is different from someone else’s does not mean that something is wrong with you. Diversity is life.

4. Asking questions are not bad for the inquisitive mind. We all have a right to use our voice, and if you need help don't allow pride to hinder you.

5. Don’t be afraid to get involved on campus in the things you might be interested in. It might seem intimidating, but discovering new things you enjoy is a rewarding experience.

6. It’s OKAY to make mistakes! We’re not perfect, and don't always have the answers sometimes. Your mistakes can lead you to the steps of greatness.

7. If you're stressed out, take a breather and RELAX. Find inspiration that will help you cool down. Whether that is taking a walk with nature, spending time with friends, or taking an ice-cream break.

8. Take care of yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally. Balance is they key, and will lead you to a positive lifestyle.

9. What others may think of you is none of your business. You came to college for a reason, so don't be chained by the opinion of others.

10. Fear is a liar! Learn to not let it hold you back from the things you love or desire in life. Fear will tell you every reason why you CAN’T do it. Hold on to hope instead.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
