It's that time of year again... The leaves are dead, the air is crisp, and pumpkins litter people's front lawns. Halloween is creeping just around the corner, and while some of us may be a little too old to trick or treat, it's the perfect excuse to pop in a scary film.
So here are a few freaky flicks to scare your pants off this Halloween.
1. Halloween (1978) dir. John Carpenter
The quintessential Halloween horror movie, "Halloween" popularized the slasher film genre that became intensely popular in the '70s and '80s.
2. Eraserhead (1977) dir. David Lynch
Lynch's first feature film, who also created the '90s cult classic "Twin Peaks", is a trippy surrealist film that makes absolutely no sense. Seriously, none. From the baby that looks like a cow fetus to the genetically modified chickens, it's a nightmarish movie that'll stick with you.
3. The Silence of The Lambs (1991) dir. Jonathan Demme
This psychological horror won five Oscars, with good reason. It's wonderfully filmed and acted, and although Sir Anthony Hopkins's performance as the cannibalistic psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecter is bone chilling, equally note worthy and often overlooked is Ted Levine as serial killer Buffalo Bill. (Also, if you enjoy this film, I highly recommend NBC's Hannibal. Mads Mikkelsen gives Hopkins a run for his money as Dr. Lecter)
4. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1919) dir. Robert Wiene
Although silent films may not sound like they'd be particularly scary, this German film has a surreal, dream like atmosphere. It was also a huge influence on Tim Burton.
5. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) dir. Wes Craven
This classic slasher will make you never want to sleep again, plus it features a young Johnny Depp, which should automatically put it on your must watch list.
6. Psycho (1960) dir. Alfred Hitchcock
Hitchcock was a master of suspense, and this movie is guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat, especially the famous shower scene.
7. Dracula (1931) dir. Tod Browning
8. The Babadook (2014) dir. Jennifer Kent
9. The Shining (1980) dir. Stanley Kubrick
The film version of horror master Stephen King's popular novel is just as scary as the book, with an unforgettable performance by Jack Nicholson.
10. The Exorcist (1973) dir. William Friedkin
No horror movie list would be complete without "The Exorcist." While it may no longer hold the title of "scariest movie of all time," it's certainly chilling and definitely holds up, largely because it's filmed as more of a drama than a horror movie and doesn't need to rely on gore to scare the viewer.
