I work in a library, where DVDs check out just as often as books. Anytime someone brings 10 Cloverfield Lane to the front desk, I make sure I tell the patron how much I love the movie, and I'm always surprised when most people respond with, "is it? I haven't seen it yet!"
It's a crime, really.
This film, which tells the story of a woman who has been kidnapped by a doomsday prepper who is convinced there is a nuclear invasion, is brilliantly tense and creepy. I don't want to give too much away, so I'll let the trailer speak for itself.
If you haven't seen this film yet, here are ten reasons why you should drop everything and watch it now!
1. Brilliant female lead
Michelle is TOUGH. She's smart without being obnoxious, strong without having abilities she shouldn't have, and kind without being a doormat. She's easily one of my favorite fictional characters.
2. John Goodman
Generally, John Goodman is seen as a pretty lovable guy. Whether you know him from Roseanne or Monsters Inc., when you think "John Goodman," you probably think of comedy. However, in 10 Cloverfield Lane, he's pretty terrifying. He's a manipulative, controlling, kidnapping doomsday prepper who is waaay too prepared for everything.
3. That ending
Some people loved it (me!), some hated it, but it was definitely necessary.
4. Serious Suspense
You never know what's going to happen next, or when Howard is going to snap. Just when you think everything is okay, something happens that changes everything. It'll have you on the edge of your seat!
5. Genuinely unsettling
Howard is creepy. The idea that everything outside of the bunker has been destroyed is terrifying. Literally everything that happens in this movie is a nightmare, which makes it so fun to watch.
6. Funny
Despite the fact that it is seriously terrifying at times, 10 Cloverfield Lane is also full of little, funny moments and inside jokes for the viewers. "I Think We're Alone Now" playing on a jukebox shouldn't be as funny as it is in this movie!
7. J.J. Abrams
If you're a J.J. Abrams fan, you HAVE to see this movie! Not only did he produce it, he is also set to direct the film God Particle, which is supposed to be connected to both Cloverfield and 10 Cloverfield Lane.
8. Allegory for domestic abuse
In an article for The Verge, writer Tasha Robinson theorizes that the film is a metaphor for domestic abuse. She explains how Howard's actions and personality traits are basically a checklist for abusive behaviors, and even uses the ending (that I won't spoil) as evidence to prove her argument. It's fascinating, and definitely makes sense!
9. Michelle is NOT a Mary Sue!
Honestly, I hate the term "Mary Sue." It just seems like another way to disregard and put down female characters. That being said, I have to admit that it IS really satisfying to see a character's skills and abilities actually set up, and THIS MOVIE DOES THAT! There are plenty of shots that seem random at first, but later serve as an explanation for why a character is able to do certain things. YES!
10. The fan theories!
There are so many! From the previously-mentioned 'domestic abuse' theory to 'Emmett is the real villain' theories, it's a fun rabbit hole to fall into!
Now, go watch and enjoy the movie!
