When I was growing up, it was not unusual to have children's worship songs or Christian pop music playing in my house. As I got older, I listened less to the simple children's songs such as Jesus Loves Me and instead listened to the contemporary radio station: Klove. Now in college, I found an amazing group of friends that share the same background as me. We like many other college students, do not miss an opportunity to jam out to some music. We refer to it as "Jesus music," but these songs are more than religious words. They are empowering songs in all genres of music. Here are some contemporary songs everyone should listento regardless of your own beliefs.
1. "You are More" by Tenth Avenue North
This song is for the days where you feel not important or that no-body cares about you. The message is that your worth is not defined by the mistakes you made or way society perceives you. "She says, how did I get here? I'm not who I once was. And I'm crippled by the fear, that I've fallen too far to love, Don't you know who you are?"
2. "His Daughter" by Molly Kate Kestner
Kestner said in an interview this song is a fictional account of a teenage girl who grew up with an abusive father and later turned to men to fill the painful emptiness in her life. In her darkest hours, she cries out to God who saves her with His grace. When I heard the song I related in some levels and I found it comforting that in our lowest points someone still has hope for you.
3. "When I Am with You" by Citizen's Way
For those who are teenage believers, this song relates perfectly to the struggle to be a Christian in today's society. It says that there is not one right way to be a Christian and that you can still be normal."Everything’s not fine, And I’m not okay but it’s nice to know I can come this way. When I’m with You, I feel the real me finally breaking through."
4. "Never Stop" by Urban Rescue
The chorus of this song is so empowering. It explains that no matter what, God will not stop chasing after us. This means that he wants to have a relationship with us. The thought that you cannot do anything to ruin someone's love for you is beyond believable.
5. "God's Not Dead" By Newsboys
Based off the popular movie, God's not Dead, this song parallels the plot of a young boy who must prove to his classmates in a philosophy class that God does exist. The song signifies believing in something greater.
6. "Dear Younger Me" by MercyMe
This song may seem melancholy at first only expressing regret yet, is also a love song. The narrator of the song wants to prevent his failures from happening to somebody else. It is about being there for the people you care about.
7. "Flawless" by MercyMe
The music video for this song is deeply moving. It shows people who are judged by society; those with mental disorders, with physical disabilities, with cancer, and with doubt all wiping the labels away. It describes that the conditions or your environment does not define you. "No matter the bumps, No matter the bruises, No matter the scars, Still the truth is you are made flawless."
8. "Church Clap" by Lecrae
This is a Christian rap song all about singing for the joy of singing. It is an upbeat, catchy tune to dance to when you are feeling silly.
9. "Drops in the Ocean" by Hawk Nelson
Forgiveness is a hard term to grasp. It is had to forgive people who hurt you or those you love. Yet this song describes the grace God has for those who have faith and chooses to forgiven them as often as they sin. The song challenges us to forgive those who wronged us.
10. "Sparrows" by Jason Gray
After listening to this song, I just feel so much happier and the air feel lighter. It awakens your day to the good moments in your life.
