10 "Basic" Things I Suppress Around My "Cool" Friends

Because at UPS being mainstream is the weirdest thing you can be...

10 "Basic" Things I Suppress Around My "Cool" Friends
Kayla Littleton

I am as basic as they come. There is absolutely no denying it. I am so drawn into mainstream media that I could tell you at least five celebrity current events at any given moment... any... given... moment. I also go to a very "non-mainstream" school. My UPS friends are all WAY more hip than I am, but still somehow tolerate me and I think I have finally discovered the reason why--I am a MUCH better actress than I thought. So, here are 10 things that I actively suppress in order to make my friends think I'm cool... even though I'm not.

1. I worship E News.

I follow not one, not two, but THREE E! Network Instagram accounts and look through each of them every day. Celebrity gossip is my crack.

2. I am highly emotionally invested in TV characters...

The Vampire Diaries characters are my life. I could tell you every up and down of the Damon-Elena-Stefan-Caroline love saga from episode one. I'm very invested in them and definitely cry every time Damon gives up on being good enough for Elena.

3. I really enjoy Top 40 music.

It's not that I have no idea what good music is and only listen to Top 40 (I have my weird obscure music tastes too!), I just really enjoy pop because it's fun and I can belt it in my car and it doesn't always have to mean something.

4. I still read a lot of YA Fiction.

Like a lot. I read Sarah Dessen books even though I am absolutely not a 16 year old girl anymore and thus can't really relate to any of her characters--I still love them.

5. I'm a hopeless romantic...

...and still day dream about Prince Charming sweeping me off my feet and away from whatever hells my life contains at that point. Just Prince Charming is a little less "Prince Charming" now and a little more "Prince Edgy-interesting-deep conversation-artistic talent Charming."

6. I know the lyric to every single Taylor Swift song.

I do. And I'm lying when I say I'm not sure what song that lyric is from... because I do... I don't like the fact that I do... but I do.

7. I still have a Build-A-Bear collection.

I still like going to Build-A-Bear... I might be seven years old and just look 22...

8. My tattoo absolutely is a One Direction reference.

It also means something else, but like duh... it's a One Direction reference. But not in front of any of my "cool friends" oh hell no. I deny that like crazy when someone asks me that in front of them... and it's happened... more than once.

9. I am 100% still a JoBroHoe.

My childhood room is still full of all my JoBro memorabilia and all the CDs. When I was 13 every square inch of my room was covered in posters and pictures of the Jonas Brothers. I know their birthdays, favorite colors, middle names and too many creepy things to list. I know its weird. I know. But I have no shame.

10. I'm extremely self-conscious about all of these things.

These parts of my personality all seem so shallow and lame and young, but these are not all that I am. I am so much more than the dorky things I love. I can keep up with my "cool friends," but suppressing this side of me kinda sucks. But I'd rather keep it inside than look like a loser and be taken less seriously.

Granted, most of my so called "cool friends" know these things about me and still love me anyway, but there are still things I keep locked away in my brain and don't talk about until I get a phone call from my home best friend who can keep up with the crazy. Then I get it out of my system and go back to acting like I'm "cool"--whatever that means.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
