10 Bad Habits Going Out With 2017

The habits I'm going to kick for my new years resolution

We all have bad habits. With the year winding down, I’ve decided which ones I want to leave behind in 2017. Maybe one or two will strike a chord with you.

1. Staying up way too late

This one’s a monster. I know I have things in the morning that I’ll be too exhausted to do, but I’m just so productive after 10:00 that I can’t help but stay awake. I’m slowly setting bedtime goals for myself to kick this habit.

2. Sleeping in way too late

Going along with staying up too late, I desperately need my full eight hours of sleep, at least. My previous line of thought was “if I have to stay awake until anytime between 2 am and 10 am, so be it.” Now I’m more preoccupied with living my life within normal human hours, often at the expense of sleep. But hey, at least I’m getting out of bed!

3. Procrastinating

It may not seem like a bad habit, but it truly is. If you know you can get away with it, you’ll never stop. Procrastination is the #1 source of stress in my life, so why not try to kick it to the curb on the way out of this year?

4. Biting my nails

Yes, I’ll admit it; I still bite my nails. I’ve tried everything to stop, from nail polish to plain old willpower. It looks like willpower is what it’s going to take at this point.

5. Watching too much Netflix in a row

Really this isn’t exclusive to Netflix, but that’s definitely a main culprit. My problem is that I just can’t stop, which is exactly why this is a bad habit.

6. Playing on my phone before bed

I go to bed at 10:00 every night. I just don’t go to sleep until midnight, and it’s all because I'm playing on my phone. Maybe all that evidence that being on your phone late at night might be onto something...

7. Swearing

The next person who tells me swearing isn’t ladylike is going to get punched. Perhaps for the safety of everyone it would be best if I stopped.

8. Living my entire life on the internet

There is nothing on the internet that is a true replacement for real life. Why do I spend so much time on it then? Bad habits, that’s why.

9. Eating when I’m not hungry

Sometimes I’ll eat just to have something to do. Not only is that not good for my body, but also isn’t good for my mind, as I’m training myself to want food when I’m bored.

10. Interrupting people

You can never have any quality conversations or relationships if all you think about is what you’re trying to say next. Not interrupting people goes hand in hand with being mindful and present in the current conversation. Plus, half the time what I want to interrupt with is completely off topic.

Whatever your bad habits may be, the beginning of a new year is a great excuse to list a few you want to stop and do something about it. And hey, just like any other resolution, maybe one of us will be able to manage it.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
