Unless you've been living under a rock you know the '90s are back. Past trends are spreading like wildfire, and your old favorites will be basic again before you can rewind “The Breakfast Club” on VHS. Channel your inner Rachel Greene and reintroduce these 10 trends to your life while they’re still different than the person next to you.
1. The Choker Necklace
If you haven't jumped back on the choker bandwagon yet, you're late to the party. From Posh Spice to the entire cast of Clueless, the choker has, and continues to, represent the attitude and edginess of soft grunge '90s style. Note: if you're a 90's baby like myself, chances are you remember stealing your mom's nylons and hiding in a closet cutting yourself a choker before she notices they're missing. This is NOT the version we want to recreate.
2. The Scrunchie
Pros: easy, effortless look, quick, doesn't leave that awkward kink in your hair. Cons: none.
3. The Jukebox
Stop what you're doing and open your app store. TouchTunes will change your bar experience. Modernizing the jukebox, TouchTunes lets you buy credits and choose songs on your phone to play. Most bars and some restaurants are connected to the app. You'll find your traditional "Brown Eyed Girl" and "Come Together" here, but if your musical preference is more "Pocketful of Sunshine" you can play that too (wince).
4. Denim, denim, and a little more denim
The Levi patch on the back of your torn jeans. Your dad's jean jacket. Distressed overalls and the front-button jean skirt. Wear it all. Do yourself a favor; Save some money and skip the lines at Urban by hitting Goodwill first. No better way to wear '90s looking clothes than to wear 90's clothes.
5. Round sunglasses
Everything you've heard about what glasses to wear for your face shape, forget it. These are an instant time machine. Insert cheesy quote about confidence for proper execution.
6. Platforms
You wore them to the pool and watched Mary-Kate and Ashley win London in them. Ditch the stilettos for platforms and stop walking like a newborn calf. You might even be able to chew your gum at the same time.
7. Real Activities
Remember the days of Scrabble, bike rides, and verbal conversation? Take your head out of your technology and enjoy some real human interaction for a little bit. I promise there are enough Bachelor reruns for you to catch it before next week.
8. Music Tees
You already know how to wear your favorite graphic tee, so get yourself a Nirvana or Stones one and throw it on the same way. However, if you're not going to listen to them at least do some research so that when someone asks about your favorite song you don't respond with a blank stare.
9. White Adidas
10. Pins and Patches
Pins and iron-on patches are a creative way to personalize your backpack, jean jacket, or even baseball cap. Express your interests and you'll have a product that doesn't match anyone else's.
