How Finding a Job Is Like Dating

As we all get older and supposedly more responsible we have to start thinking about the future. Specifically, finding a job after college. There are some surprising similarities between dating and finding a job.

How Finding a Job Is Like Dating

1. You’re nervous to meet them for the first time
You might have a small panic attack right before walking in.

2. What if you say something weird and they don’t call back?
The fear of saying something awkward is all too prevalent.

3. How many times should you call them?
You need to decide how much to follow up.

4. The fear of not having anything/anyone
You don’t want to be left out in the cold.

5. Trying to be cool but still showing them you’re interested
It’s a tricky balancing act.

6. It is an emotional roller coaster
Waiting by the phone for them to call back can take a toll.

7. Lots of personal questions are asked
Pretty much the same questions are asked on interviews and dates.

8. You worry about your appearance
Is your shirt wrinkled? Is your hair still in place?

9. You spend a lot of time picking your outfit
You have to find the perfect balance between professional and personal expression.

10. You worry about how you’re sitting
Should you cross your legs? Am I sitting up straight?

11. Fear of being rejected
The crippling fear of being said no to.

12. Trying to find similar interests to connect on
Don’t force similarities but there is usually something everyone can connect about.

13. Can’t rush into anything
If you rush into a relationship then it might not be the one for you.

14. You need to find some chemistry
You need to find the connection.

15. You need to be picky, but not too picky
You need to be picky enough to narrow down your options but not so picky that you don’t have any.

16. Hotshots usually aren’t all they are made out to be
Flashy things are usually just that: a lot of shine without the substance.

17. You can’t say bad things about your past relationships
Don’t say negative things about something you’ve left in the past.

18. Don’t be the only one talking; know when to listen
People love to talk about themselves; they will feel more of a connection if you let them talk

19. Trust your instincts
If you get a weird feeling about something major, trust it.

20. Sometimes, it's just plain luck

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
