This winter has surprised us all with not only new low temperatures, but also how far it has stretched all over the country. Many southern states are starting to feel the harsh frost and schools everywhere are cancelling school simply because of the freezing temperatures.
It’s easy to laugh at Texas about cancelling school over a dusting of snow, especially if you are from a colder state and know what it’s like to drive to school in a blizzard.
It’s not so easy to laugh when kids without the proper clothes freeze walking to school or waiting outside for the bus.
The “cold day” school cancellations that have swept the nation are no laughing matter, or silly overreaction. Instead, they are looking out for the kids who may not have proper shoes or jackets.
According to The Weather Channel website, the temperatures this month have been consistently below average. The Weather Channel has identified the cold as a surge of Artic air, instead of the Polar Vortex that some thought it was at the beginning of January.
Regardless, it is logical to cancel school due to the cold and help keep many kids from becoming sick and potentially missing more school.
If you have old winter clothes that are too small or that you just don’t wear, look into donating them back into your community. Any jackets, gloves or shoes can help the children who are not adequately equipped to go to school in the cold.
