My Zodiac Sign Doesn't Define Who I Am

Don't presume you know how I act, because it somewhat resembles how my sign acts.

We all have that one friend who believes in zodiac sign personalities. All logic goes out of the window and with a reverent tone, she explains how her personality and her zodiac are interlinked.

“It’s not a coincidence!” she exclaims. She knows every position of her sign and if you tell her your birthday, not only does she know your zodiac, she knows your personality, your love life, and your true soulmate. And the infamous “Oh, that makes so much sense” when you tell her your birthday.

Do you know her? We all do.

I'm not here to disregard her beliefs. I don't know if astrology has logic behind it, I don't know if the month you were born in inflicts boundaries to your personality or if knowing our sign’s personality influences our own, but I do know we need to talk about it.

I believe each human being is unique, like every snowflake that falls to the ground. I believe your personality and your opinions are shaped by your surroundings and the environment you were exposed to as a child. I believe change is the only constant in the universe, so by that logic, our personalities are intrinsically evolving every second of our life. So, therefore I can’t comprehend the basis of astrology.

How can you say that because I am a Scorpio, I have to portray the traits found in Scorpios? I don't understand how you can accept the reasons why I am who I am, just because my zodiac sign says so.

I am who I am because of the obstacles I have overcome, the friends I have made, the people I have loved, the things I have had the courage to do and the hopes I have for who I am going to be. Don't dilute me down to just being a zodiac sign. I am an accumulation of my past, present, and future.Do not try to define me by my sign. I am more than that. Don't presume you know how I act because it somewhat resembles how my sign acts.

I don't care if I am the most mainstream Scorpio you have ever met. Trust me, there are things about every person which isn't obvious, easily noticeable, or comprehensible. If you aren't willing to figure them out, then why are you wasting your time talking to that person?

Yes, astrological readings are uncannily relatable, but if a person could write about your personality, your love life, your passion, and who you are on a website? You are severely underestimating your complexity.

Be proud of your quirks and your beliefs, even if it’s as trivial as grammar peeves or as complex as abortion stances; these are fragments of you no one can predict, or write on a website.

Next time you go look into your zodiac sign (and trust me, we all do because its so interesting), remember this: you may be born at a particular time but that doesn't define who you are.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
