For those of you that are YouTube lovers, you wait every year until you see the video titled YouTube Rewind. You click on the video extremely excited to see what they have in store and it seems to disappoint. I believe this is because we have our standards set pretty high as to what exactly we want it to be.
For the ones that are in the dark, YouTube Rewind is an incredible mashup of everything of importance, according to YouTube, or popular culture such as memes or songs that have happened during each year, while showcasing some of their more well-known content creators.
This year's Youtube Rewind was one of the biggest when it came to featuring content creators. It had 228 content creators featured and most of them have more than 1 million subscribers. A lot of people complain that their favorite content creator wasn't in it and sometimes the content creators themselves will complain that they weren't invited to be in it, but I believe we need to look at it in the perspective of the people put in charge of producing this. Not only do they have to feature popular content creators from the U.S., but they also have to try to incorporate popular content creators from all around the globe. I believe they were extremely successful in featuring hundreds of creators in the short amount of time they had.
Another thing that I really enjoyed was the playlist or the background music of the video. They featured popular songs that everyone knows such as "The Shape of You" by Ed Sheeran, "Despacito" by Luis Fonsi, or even "Humble" by Kendrick Lamar. All of the songs were very popular during the year of 2017 and mashed very well together. (I will have to say I am extremely confused about why "Allstar" was in there? Like yes, that is a great meme, but it isn't very 2017?)
Let's talk about some of the memes and pop culture references that they covered. I loved the fidget spinners and slime because everyone knows that they did become popular in the year of 2017 and that they will never die. We also saw that everyone was jumping up on the nearest object as they were referencing "the floor is lava" challenge. April the Giraffe was hinted at several times with the several giraffes in the video. This was a live video of the birth of the Toys R Us baby giraffe that a lot of the world witnessed on YouTube. The Rolex dance challenge was also featured in the video.
Finally, I would like to talk about how proud I am about YouTube touching on all the tragic events that have happened throughout the year of 2017. There was one scene during the Solar Eclipse, which was cleverly shaped like a YouTube play button, where it showed several shots of different newscast stations around the world talking about tragic events such as The Houston incident and the bombing during the Ariana Grande concert. Then it took us to shots of several YouTubers holding hands symbolizing the fact that even when we are going through tough times we can all come together and unite.
If you haven't seen this video then I recommend you smash this link and create your own personal opinion on it. (Everyone may be upset that the Paul brothers were featured in it, but I am a Jake Pauler for life ;) )
