Warning: Spoilers Ahead
The highest grossing comic book film box office opening ever has the world split right down the middle with Zack Snyder fans and haters. If you didn’t already know, Snyder is the director for "Batman vs. Superman," the movie that has taken over cinemas recently. Most of the haters are either Marvel fans or just normal people who wanted to see a good movie on a Friday night. You’ll even find some DC fans who wish they hadn’t even made the effort to see it. I’m going to tell you, however, why "Batman v Superman" is a success.
Any DC Comics fan knows that Snyder went to great lengths to preserve the graphic novel storylines that inspired this movie. "The Dark Knight Returns" and "The Death of Superman" storylines were basically mashed together and minor changes were made. You can say all you want, but no one can deny how well the producers and screenwriters adapted these stories from book to film. There were many big aspects like the armored bat suit, Batman’s brutal style of fighting, Batman ultimately beating Superman in the showdown, Superman being killed by Doomsday, and his funeral that are originally from the comics, but there are many little nods towards these and other DC graphic novels. Such as the Flash’s visit to Bruce through a wormhole ("Crisis on Infinite Earths"), the burnt Robin costume with Joker graffiti ("A Death in the Family"), and Darkseid’s parademon soldiers ("Justice League 1-4").
Now I’m not going to sit here and talk the movie up like it was flawless. I said it was a success, not perfect. The only problem I have with the movie is the fact that Batman breaks his one rule and does away with moral code. Watching the dark knight kill someone is like watching a pig fly; it’s not supposed to happen. So the fact that Snyder brought Batman down to this level of morality does not sit well with me at all. However, I refuse to let this ruin the movie for me.
Batman, despite the fact that he’s a murderer, is the best part of this movie by far. Every single scene is absolutely captivating. This is the best cinematic depiction of Batman to date because Snyder made the dark knight darker than ever. Batman is viewed as a criminal and though he saves lives, he does it in a manner that is frightening. There is a scene where he saves a group of women from sex traffickers and the women chose to stay in their cages hiding until the cops got there because they were so scared of Batman. The cops found one of the criminals chained, beaten and branded. Bruce Wayne is a good man, but the movie depicts perfectly how broken down and hardened he is after 20 years of crime fighting.
"Justice League" is set up perfectly. In case you didn’t know, in 2017 and 2018 "Justice League" part one and two are going to come out. This movie was equally a prequel to these films as it was a sequel to "Man of Steel". Aquaman, Flash, Cyborg, and Wonder Woman are all shown and their introduction fits right within the movie’s plot line. Throughout the movie, Bruce has visions of an apocalyptic battle with Darkseid’s army that he telepathically sent to Bruce to warn him of his coming. FYI Darkseid is arguably the most powerful villain in all of DC Comics. He takes over worlds and is perfect for a "Justice League" movie, in my opinion.
This movie has it all in its two-and-a-half-hour runtime. Clark and Lois love scenes, bat cave conversations with Alfred, entertaining action scenes, cunning and powerful villains, and a whole lot of superheroes. Any real DC Comics fan couldn’t be disappointed by it because this film is basically a graphic novel turned into a movie. "Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice" is a 10/10, so go enjoy some superhero gold on the big screen.
