Tame Impala is an Australian psychedelic rock band that formed in 2007 behind lead singer Kevin Parker. Parker produces, writes, performs and records the music on his own making the studio albums a product solely of Kevin Parker -- although during tours Parker does play with a band. Tame Impala's first album, "Innerspeaker," was released in 2010 to critical acclaim. Their second album, "Lonerism," released in 2012 was once again to critical acclaim -- but Tame Impala's most recent studio album release "Currents" is by far Parker's most innovative and exceptional work to date.
Clocking in at 51 minutes and six seconds, the album is one that's best enjoyed driving around your small home town at night with the windows down during the summertime. It's perfect for being in your early 20s as the album marks a period of transition in a person's life, likely brought upon by a break up, marking it as one of the best break up albums of all time, rivaling classic angst-riddled masterpieces like the Violent Femmes' debut self titled album or any number of Ben Folds' emotional piano pieces. What makes the album so provocative and personally engaging is the clear similarities one who has experienced a rough break up will spot in life and the way Parker portrays the emotional strain and difficulties a break up causes. A clear example of this is track eight on the album "Past Life" which embodies the sinking feeling one experiences when encountering someone who was involved in their life previously but no longer is.
While the album certainly embodies the feelings of a break up, not every song has to do exactly with breaking up. Other songs embodies other parts of growing up and transition, like the final song on the album "New Person, Same Old Mistakes" that chronicles the self doubt and difficulties one goes through when marking a change in their life. On a side note, Rihanna's new album "Anti" features an excellent cover of this song that is worth listening to.
Aside from the cohesive themes and engrossing lyrics, the album's music videos offer some extremely creative imagery that varies from the surreal to the sexual. One of the single tracks, easily the most poppy and upbeat, "The Less I Know The Better" chronicles the struggles of a high school baseball player to capture the feelings of a cheerleader who he casually hooked up with, unfortunately she's now interested in the school's mascot Trevor, who wears an ape suit for the entirety of the music video. "The Less I Know The Better" video is extremely sexual in nature, almost to the point of laughable, but the imagery and special effects are extremely interesting and embody the psychedelic and otherworldly theme Parker goes for. Another video from the album for the song "Let It Happen" seems to chronicle the heart attack and death of a man who's late for his flight. Quickly the video goes from normal to extremely strange as the floor opens up and he's suddenly on the plane he missed holding a giant clock, transitioning again to a hotel room. From here, the video ups the ante and gets even more crazy, eventually featuring a talking sandwich and a plane crash.
Tame Impala's "Currents" stands as one of my favorite albums of 2015 and will remain a classic staple in my music library.
