You know what's important? Potatoes. Many other things, but also, potatoes. They are one of the most versatile things on this planet, second only to Madonna. An important conversation that I strangely find myself in often is what the best form of potato is. Well, worry not, because I'm here to settle the debate, once and for all. Here, in my humble opinion, are the nine best versions of potatoes, ranked from worst (a relative term) to best.
9. Scalloped potatoes
Although these are technically listed as the worst form of potato, all potatoes are good potatoes. That being said, scalloped potatoes have got to be my least favorite form of potatoes. They're so heavy and never have as much flavor as I hope they will. Not going to lie, though, I'll still probably eat them if you offer.
8. French fries
Basic french fries are this far up on the list because it all depends on where you get them from and their temperature. There's too much left up to chance. They can either be perfectly crispy and warm and golden brown or they could be like McDonald's french fries when you let them sit too long--soggy, cold, and just generally terrible. I would rather not take the risk when it can get so much better.7. Smiley fries
This is a throwback to your childhood. The nostalgia effect is definitely part of what makes these so good, but they're still really delicious on their own. They're number seven because they're delicious fresh out of the oven, but try and reheat them, and you will be very disappointed. Also, to be honest, sometimes they kind of freak me out.
6. Baked potatoes
The most versatile form of potato, these are yummy no matter what you throw on them. Sour cream, chives, cheese, butter, the possibilities are endless, and they're a go to when you're a poor college student that can honestly only afford a potato and some stolen cheese from the dining hall.
5. Tater tots
Here is when we get into the really good stuff. Tater tots. The food of champions. You can eat a million of them and still want more (or maybe that's just me), which may not technically be a good thing, but I'm going to pretend that they're good for me and continue existing in tot-filled heaven.
4. Hash browns
Like tater tots, but bigger. What more could you want?3. Sweet potato fries
I know this is controversial, but sweet potatoes are potatoes, so I'm counting them. Sweet potatoes are one of those things that you either love or hate, and I love them. They're a nice alternative to the classic fry, and they're the perfect balance of sweet and savory. Count me in.2. Mashed potatoes
That's right kids, they're not just for Thanksgiving. These classics are an ideal meal for me. I definitely have just eaten a bowl of mashed potatoes for dinner before, and I have absolutely no regrets. They are the prime example of comfort food--warm, soft, delicious. Yes.
1. Curly fries
And the winner is the curly fry--or BBQ fries or twirly fires, depending on where you're from. Besides the fact that they're just a marvel in their shape, they're good in all forms--crispy, soft, long, short, hot, cold and with pretty much any sauce you put on them. Go get yourself some, you'll thank me.The moral of the story is, I'm hungry, and potatoes are a gift in all forms. Some are just a little better than others.
