Being a camp counselor is the best summer job ever. You spend most of your time outside, fashion consists of flannels and old jeans, coffee comes in styrofoam cups, and you meet some of the most amazing individuals you'll ever come in contact with. Camp counselors spend their summers singing songs, building fires, and loving life. It's a strange life out there in the woods, and sometimes, the most unlikely memories are made.
You know you're a camp counselor when....
1. Food tastes better when you're outside, freezing, exhausted, or just impeccably happy.
2. Building a fire makes you feel like a superhero. Therefore, you are a superhero every single day.
3. Weekend sleeping is not nearly as satisfying as crawling into a sleeping bag and hiding from bugs.
4. Hills are seen as calf builders.
5. Hills also mean that you can feel no shame in eating that sixth chocolate chip cookie from the kitchen.
6. Plunging toilets is a weekly routine, complete with correct technique and hilarious anecdotes.
7. Tie dye. Tons and tons of tie dye.
8. You're either a camper's best friend or their acclaimed enemy. It's ok, just keep singing songs and being ridiculous.
9. Everything can turn into a camp song reference.
10. Professional storyteller is on your resume.
11. No one laughs at your jokes as much as your counselor friends do.
12. Hugging a camper goodbye is bittersweet, and you are constantly reminded how much you love your job.
13. Looking socially acceptable is not only an accomplishment, but it is a sacred day meant to be remembered.
14. You've declared war on all mosquitos.
15. Mice really aren't that bad, as long as they are named and kept a close eye on.
16. Lake water looses its disgusting factor when you think of all the good times jumping off the dock.
17. You had no free time during the summer because it was all spent at camp...and you're ok with that!
Being a camp counselor is an experience that changes lives. It makes individuals more dependent, more comfortable in their own skin, and able to distract 12-year-olds at the blink of an eye. Being a camp counselor teaches life lessons (toilet plunging for example) that nothing else can compete with. Best. Summer. Job. Ever!
