For many college students, the goal is simply to get out as soon as possible. Do whatever it takes to get all passing grades, take the standard credit load, do your volunteer hours or internships and get out of there at the first chance you get. Then there are some of us crazy students who apparently like to suffer, because we decide it is a good idea to double major. Instead of graduating early, or taking a couple of light years, we decide we would rather overload ourselves with work in order to get that extra degree. Not to mention that when you take on this much work it usually feels like you wouldn't be able to put a dent in your pile of homework even if there were three of you. No matter how stressful and horrible having two majors is though, there are definitely a couple of reasons why it will be worth the headaches.
The first reason two majors will be worth your time is that it will put you miles ahead of some of your competition for your dream job. Having knowledge and experience in more than one field will give you the edge you may need when it comes to job searching. While you may be up against someone who was just as involved in the community, or who completed just as many internships, having more than one area of study could give employers the much needed impression that you will be the more qualified candidate.
Stemming from this, the second reason having two majors is worth considering is that you will simply have more knowledge. Taking all of those extra classes will teach you things that you may have never learned before, things that you could find to be extremely helpful to you down the road. Even if you take two similar majors, say communications and journalism, like myself, you will still find that you are learning different and interesting things in both sets of classes every day. Then of course if you go in the opposite direction and add a Spanish major to your psychology degree, you are opening up an entirely new world to explore with your career. Either way, the knowledge you gain from two majors can be worth the stress.
While taking the time to complete two majors may seem like the worst decision you have ever made, once you reach graduation day you will be ecstatic. Sometimes pushing yourself a little harder is worth it, and in many cases, this is one of those times. Just don't forget to make time for study breaks once in awhile!
