People always say "you're only in college once, so you better make the most of it." I completely agree with this statement. However, there are multiple ways to interpret it. Many people think that this means its acceptable to go to parties all the time. Although this does seem like a lot of fun, is that really going to help them get a job?
I have seen a lot of people struggle at college, and it's because their priorities aren't always clear. I have been in a lot of situations myself of deciding whether to go out with my friends or to stay in and study for an upcoming exam. It was hard at first, but then I realized my true friends would still be there for me when I'm not as busy.
When your grades are doing well, your professors are going to start to notice. I think that this is so important because they can tell you want this education. There are definitely people in college that are just here because they are being forced to, which is sad. If you are more passionate about something you don't need a degree for, you should be allowed to go do that. Professors can tell who is putting in work and will reward those students at the end of the semester.
Now, I'm not saying to always stay in and do homework on the weekends. We all need a little break here and there. You're allowed to have fun and still do well in school. Just make sure you have a good balance in your life and friends that support your goals and aspirations. Believe it or not, our brains need more rest than we give them.
I want to be clear though, a number doesn't define you. If you try your best and work hard, then you're doing amazing. Never let anyone tell you different. Also, realize that it's okay to ask for help because we all need help sometimes.
So, your grades do matter. College is a great time to find yourself, to meet people from different backgrounds, to achieve different goals, and to become more informed. When you are interviewing for a job, you're going to be so much more confident in yourself if you had focused on school. Hard work does pay off, but it might end up paying off a little bit later. Trust me, it will be worth the wait.
