From Instagram captions to sappy Facebook posts, "New Year, New Me" are assumedly the four most read words of the month of January. Not that there is anything wrong with setting goals and resolutions to better you within a new year, but it can be annoying to be so cliched about the new mindset.
Kid President, a prominent Youtuber and world changer, sets out to tell the truths of the world through child eyes. And while some of his ideas are just for the laughs, a lot of what he says rings true.
Cliched Resolution: I'm going to volunteer # amount of hours each week!
Honesty: Life gets in the way. It's a tough commitment to promise any set amount of time to an outside organization during the week. So take a smaller step and make sure the actions that you normally do matter. For example, Instead of sitting on the couch watching Netflix for five hours (guilty as charged), take the dogs for a walk.
Cliched Resolution: Be nice to everyone.
Honesty: There will be people you don't like in life. But if you make an effort to treat everyone likes it's their birthday, or how you would want to be treated on your birthday, you'll be nicer to them by default. Because in reality, you don't know when that professor, customer, or aggravating driver's birthday really is — it could be today!
Cliched Resolution: Hit the gym every day.
Honesty: Keeping up everyday commitments such as these is hard to accomplish, and it will make you feel bad when a goal isn't reached. Aim smaller; remind yourself that life is a reason to dance and party around your room once in awhile. Not only will it make you happier, but dancing does burns calories!
Cliched Resolution: Find more time to be with friends.
Honesty: If your idea of happiness is sitting at home curled up with a book, then there's no reason to force yourself to join your friends on their weekly bar crawls. Remember that you're the party, and find time to do what makes you happy.
Honesty: Finally, the best new years resolution to make is just to "be more awesome" in 2016. And there's nothing cliched about that. Find time to relax and do things that make you happy. In the words of Robby, our Kid President, "You're awake. You're awesome. Live like it."
