The most expensive friendship I've ever had

The Worst Parts Of Having A Long Distance Best Friend

"Hello. My name is Daniel, but my friends call me Danny. I visited Seattle with my dad once. I like orcas."

That was the first thing he ever said to me when we first met a little over 2 years ago. Since then he has become one of my best friends and my go to person for advice. Sometimes it's hard being friends though since he lives on the other side of the country. While I'm certainly glad we're friends and there are plenty of positives, these are the worst things about having a best friend that lives so far away.

1- He Can't Hug Me When I'm Sad

I love hugs. I thrive on hugs, especially when I'm sad. Having him live almost 3,000 miles away from me is super rough because he can't just come over and hug me when I'm in need.

2- Visiting Him Requires Me To Sell A Kidney

Okay, maybe not a kidney. But it is expensive. A roundtrip ticket costs anywhere from a little over $500 to over $1,000, making this the most expensive friendship I've ever had.

3- Time Zones Are A Hassle

It's only a 3 hour difference, but sometimes 3 hours can seem like a lot. Specifically when I can't sleep and it's 12 am here but 3 am there and he's already asleep. Or when it's 9 am there and he's awake and ready to talk but it's 6 am here and I'm still fast asleep.

4- Not Being Able To Hang Out When We're Bored

Most friends can get together and hang out when they're bored, not us. As mentioned before it would take a kidney and 6 hour plane ride for us to hang out together. When we're both bored we're forced to just talk about how bored we are and hope for the best

5- He Can't Beat People Up For Me

Sometimes people are mean and he'd be more than willing to beat someone up for me, if it weren't for those pesky 3,000 miles that are separating us.

6- He Can't Be There For The Good Moments

I'm in band at school and sometimes there are performances that I wish he could be there for. Then there are the birthdays we can't spend together, soccer games I can't go to, graduation parties, Halloween parties, NYE parties. Needless to say holidays are rough.

7- He Roots For The Wrong Football Team

Let's just say when the Seahawks played the Patriots in the Super Bowl, our friendship almost ended.

Despite everything though, I wouldn't trade our friendship for the world.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
