Living in the world that we do, it's difficult to avoid secular influences. This is especially true with music. Commercials, stores, and radios play music all the time, and often it isn't Christian in content. Can we still worship God by singing, even if it isn't Christian music? My answer is yes, but there is some explanation that goes with it.
1. The Bible tells us to glorify God in all we do!
Yes, this includes listening to secular music and singing along. 1 Corinthians 10:31 says, "So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God." This means that literally everything we do: studying, working, walking, singing, dancing, etc. can be used to honor and glorify God!
2. But...
The tricky wording there is "can be used". There are certain activities that don't honor God; some of them are obvious, such as murder, stealing and committing adultery. (Those are in the Ten Commandments.) But others are in a more gray area, such as cursing in secular music, and doing drugs. There are people on both sides of these issues.
3. When it comes to music:
The less cursing the better! There are plenty of artists out there who have only clean music. And there are even more songs that are clean even by artists who aren't. For me personally, I try to avoid songs that have curse words in the chorus, since they are repeated often throughout the song.
Secular music can be a good thing. I can relate to different people and form friendships with them over bands and artists that we listen to that aren't Christian, and this friendship can give me a way to possibly share the Gospel with them. Secular music is a difficult topic to figure out, but I hope I have helped you see the pros and cons of secular music related to Christians.
