I’m probably not the only one who has ever faced some sort of trial or gone through some circumstance or situation where everything seems like it’s caving in. I think it’s a pretty common thing to happen. We feel alone, we feel like we’re being crushed, and we think that there is no one there who can help us through this tough time. But sometimes, I think we sit and think too much about the situation. We let the situation defeat us by giving it the power to conquer us. One thing holds true: your words give life.
That may sound super weird, and to be honest, it’s still super hard for me to remember that whenever I end up in a tough situation. It’s true though: your words give life.
Think back to elementary or middle school. They always had the programs in my school that were all about speaking things that were going to build people up instead of tearing them down. “Don’t be a bully,” “Your words hurt others, so speak nice things” and my personal favorite, “Do onto others as you would have them do to you, so be nice.” That’s all fine and dandy to remember to speak kindly and be nice to others, but what about being kind to yourself?
In the midst of hard situations, I know I sometimes knock myself down. I tell myself that it can’t be done, that the situation is too big for me to handle, that I’m going to fail, and I end up letting the words that speak to myself about the situation defeat me before the situation gets to the point where it can’t be beaten. But’s that not fair to me or to you.
You see, the words that we speak about ourselves and the situations we find ourselves in say so much about us. If we’re constantly speaking negatively and letting ourselves get beaten by our words then we’re going to be beat. If we let our own words beat us, then nothing will be able to fix that because we already have the mindset of being beaten. We’re already weak, on the ground and getting pounded.
But there is hope. Learn to speak life. Learn to speak positively and give yourself a chance! If we think with hope, if we go into the situation with the mindset that we’re going to overcome what we’re going through, we’re not going to lose in the first round. When you hit by life, you’ll be able to stand back up and fight back because you’re not done. Don’t let the mountain that your facing conquer you. Conquer yourself and your words and thoughts in order to take your strength and face that mountain.
Trust me when I say that I’m speaking from experience. So many times I’ve let a situation defeat me because I gave it the power. I knocked myself down and out of the fight before it even begun. I defeated myself and let the mountain win. Don’t make my mistake. I’m even still learning to do this, so why not learn together and win back our mind to face our mountain?
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7 (NKJV)
