Anyone who watches "Game of Thrones" knows how easily it is to become emotionally invested in a character from the hit series. Each Sunday, we reminisce in the badass moments of the episode we just watched in awe while simultaneously knowing that becoming obsessed with a character usually results in their imminent death. Specifically, however, we can’t help but become obsessed with the women of GOT. I don’t know about everyone else, but they have continuously assisted in helping me create a new feminist mantra for myself due to the strength and fierceness that they illustrate.
Even though we will never be able to set fire to our enemies by uttering the words “Dracarys,” the women of the seven kingdoms can teach and inspire us to be the strongest version of ourselves and how to be a badass woman in a world where men find themselves to be superior.
Although I didn’t include every woman in the series, here’s to eight of my favorites and why they have become my idols:
1. Arya Stark
I would never want to be on her "Kill List," but kudos to her for memorizing every name of someone who did her or her family wrong. Also, for a girl who constantly ensures others that she "doesn't need saving," Arya's strength and vulnerability are traits we all aspire to obtain or wish we had when we were 12 years old.
2. Sansa Stark
While most teenagers these days learn how to properly apply makeup, go to the movies with their friends and eventually learn the ups and downs of high school, Sansa witnessed her father’s beheading and became prisoner to Joffrey after just 10 episodes into the hit series. Eventually, however, Sansa's luck continued to fall into a downward spiral due to Little Finger’s manipulative games, Aunt Lysa's death by moon door, and Ramsays Bolton's ability to become a Joffrey 2.0 in Sansa's life.
3. Daenerys Stormborn of House Targaryen
The amount of titles that Dany has is powerful in and of itself, yet her title of Mother of Dragons is especially powerful due to her ability to utter the simple word, "Dracarys," and watch all of her enemies turn to ash. More importantly, though, in light of our new feminist mantra, Dany takes the game to a whole other level for all women everywhere (including the audience) when she tells Missandai that "all men must die, but we [women] are not men." (*Standing ovation for the Mother of Dragons*)
4. Cersei Lannister
Even though Queen Cersei is everyone's favorite woman to hate, she does have some redeeming qualities that make you want to scream, "Girl power!" As the character infamous for delivering the epitome of all Game of Thrones quotes, "When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die,” Cersei helps all of us channel our inner lioness.
5. Margaery Tyrell
Margaery taught us the art of masking your kind demeanor from your manipulative personality, how to be cunning, intelligent and still look gorgeous all at once. Best of all, she shows how women must make the best of their circumstances. (RIP Lady Margaery)
6. Ygritte
Before I explain one of my favorite characters any further, say it with me, "You know nothing, Jon Snow." Ah, now that we got that off our shoulders, let's talk about how gracefully, yet fiercely, Ygritte played with the big boys, alongside her lover, Jon Snow. My favorite aspect of their relationship was when she promised Jon that if he betrayed her, he'd have another thing coming (in so many words, at least).
7. Brienne of Tarth
“Don’t let them see your tears[…]nasty little sh*** aren’t worth crying over” Ah, yes, my girl Brienne. While I could go on hours, I thought that the best way to show off Brienne would be with not one quote from her, but two: "All my life men like you’ve sneered at me. And all my life I’ve been knocking men like you into the dust.” Watch out, boys. Lady Brienne is going to kick your ass.
8. Catelyn Stark
Among all of her fierce qualities, Lady Catelyn showed us that it didn’t matter what era you lived in, a mother’s word was real and threatening. "Listen to yourselves. If you were sons of mine, I would knock your heads together and lock you in a bedchamber until you remembered that you were brothers."
