February 14th is a day that many Americans mark on their calendar with high expectations. For those who are in relationships, this holiday has turned into a day focused on gifts, expectations, societal pressures and a feeling of competition to be the best. St. Valentine's day was originally supposed to be a celebration of love itself and appreciation for those whom you love.
Unfortunately, American society has turned this day of love into a day about "He better get me this..." or "I won't be happy unless..."
Somehow, the women of today have turned a day about celebrating love into a day of expecting their significant others to shower them with expensive gifts and romantic gestures while never giving anything in return. This is not to call out all women but a staggering amount of young adult women fall into this category. It is time for us to give ourselves a reality check and understand that love is not measured in Pandora bracelets or chocolate covered strawberries.
Just recently a friend posted on her "Finsta" account about how her boyfriend "better get me this ring for Valentine's Day or else I'll be so pissed." Honestly, you really need to check your priorities if the most important thing to you is what you receive on Valentine's Day. Why not instead spend your energy planning something to spoil your boyfriend? Why is it so one-sided? When did we as a society decide that Valentine's Day plans fall on the man in the relationship?
The point of this rant is to say that Valentine's Day has become so warped with expectations that we have lost sight of the purpose behind the celebration entirely. Wouldn't this day be more enjoyable if we dropped the stress and instead focused on showering our significant others with love? In my opinion, Valentine's Day is just another day that can be used to express feelings and show appreciation.
Don't get caught up in society's mumbo-jumbo, just love and be loved.
