5 Things I Wish My Dog Could Understand

Because lets be honest, I'd rather hangout with her than anyone else.

The saying is diamonds are a girls best friend, but who needs a rock when you can have a whole dog?? I have a 2.5-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Meadow, and let me tell ya, she's my baby, and I wouldn't trade her for the biggest diamond in the world.

My freshman year, she lived at home with my family because I obviously couldn't take her to school with me, and if I would have it would have been SO unfair to her. This year, I have a house in my college town, so it's just me and her 24/7 (along with her Beardie brother Mushu). We spend a lot of time together, and there are times I really think she understands what I'm saying, but I know most of it is just her getting excited that I'm talking to her.

If there were just a few things that she could really understand, I would hope it would be these:

1. I love you unconditionally

Yes, even when you try to steal my bread, or when you drag me around campus chasing the squirrels. When I see you, it makes my heart happy. You can make my bad days good and my good days even better. I've loved other dogs, but I've never loved one as much as I love you. You are more than a dog; you're family, and I love you more than you'll ever know.

2. It broke my heart to leave you

We spent a whole week of just you and I going to the dog park, getting extra lake time and buying new squeaky toys, but it didn't make leaving you any easier. I missed you all the time and asked how you were doing almost every day. Your pictures were all over my room, and you were always on my mind.Every dog I saw on campus reminded me of you, and just made me want you here with me even more.

3. Not all other dogs are friends

We all want friends

You are such a sweet and loving dog, and like me, you always try to see the good in everyone. We have had several talks while we were out on our walks about how we can't just trust everyone. You still don't understand that the other dogs aren't playing when they growl, but I know you're just being friendly. You want friends so bad, but you look too scary to the othet dogs, if only they knew how sweet you are. The world is full of grumpy dogs and grumpy owners, but you and I are not some of them.

4. Having you with me now makes me happier than you'll ever know

When I have bad days at work, I come home and it doesn't matter because you make it all better. Having something to come home to makes the day less dreadful, and I'm so happy you're here. You are always here when I need someone to talk to early in the morning or late at night.

5. I don't know what I'm going to do without you

My best friend

Your breed is known for its relatively short lifespan, so I know that we don't have as much time together as our friends do. I get asked all the time if that if I would have known the average lifespan before I got you if I would do it all over again, and every time, my answer is yes.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
