There is no better way to understand what a Wisconsin Winter entails rather than experiencing it for yourself. The cold and flurries have just begun—come January, you’ll be longing for the chilly weather we are experiencing now. If this is your first Wisconsin Winter, get read for a cold one and invest in good cold weather gear.
If you haven’t already invested in a parka, go out now—stop what you are doing an get to a Northface store before it is too late. They are truly worth the fat 300-dollar price tag. Not only will they keep you warm on the walks up Bascom, but they can double as a nice and cozy cocoon for afternoon naps. You must get a parka unless you plan on Ubering to every class or enjoy nearly freezing to death.
In the same way, a proper pair of snow boots is necessary. For a state with so much snow, you would think the snow removal services would always be on point. Think again. For the days when it literally does not stop snowing, you may find yourself yourself walking on a sidewalk that hasn’t been plowed, crossing a street covered in grey slush. Although your body will be nice and toasty in your parka, your feet will not be. Again, you will be attending this university for four years which means four, long winters to come. Make the investment in a good pair of tall snow boots to make sure your feet and calves are shielded from the snow and brisk winds.
Just as important as high-quality boots and a coat, your accessories are key in keeping you warm throughout the winter. Gloves, hat, and scarves are all essential items to ensure your fingers don’t freeze off, your ears don’t go numb, and your face and neck don’t turn purple. Pick up a pair of texting gloves so you are still able to change your music and send a text on your way to class. Get the biggest scarf you can find; I promise you won't regret it. Everyone will be looking like the Michelin Man and if you don’t look likd him, you’re doing it wrong. Winter is not a time to worry about how puffy your coat is or how ugly you look in your hat.
If the clothes aren’t enough, a key factor in warmth is the amount of coffee running through your body. In my logic, the more you drink, the warmer you are. The warm cup in your hand is just an added perk. It’s also an excuse to drink more coffee. In the Sinter, it is just that much harder to get out of your toasty bed, but the thought of a steaming vanilla latte from Starbuck’s can alleviate some of your winter blues.
Aside from the frigid temperatures and ample snowfall, Wisconsin winters aren’t all that bad. We have the luxury of a winter wonderland that is perfect for sledding, ice skating, and snowball fights on Bascom. Enjoy the vast expanses of white in all your winter gear essentials.
