After finals week, going home for a while sounds like heaven...but then it's not.
I just got my first taste of true "freedom" this past semester by renting my own apartment. Prior to that, I was still living in a sorority house, with a sorority house "mom". Basically, I still had chores. Having my own apartment with my own rules was great, but I learned quickly that the rules my mother and house mom (shout out to you Sue and Gwen!) enforced were actually practical. Contrary to popular belief, these women are looking out for you.
Lets take a look at the rules that we had to obey over break:
MANNERS
I grew up in a suburban part of Texas, where "Ma'am"and "Sir" as titles were pretty much common knowledge. That might seem a bit formal in our vernacular, but it never hurts to be polite.
ALCOHOL
Yes, you may be legal now, but you still shouldn't get blacked out at your parents' house. Hear me out: Drinking 2 (or 3) beers with your family is fine, but trust me - no one wants to see the beer-bong abilities you picked up at school. Especially not your parents, AKA the ones paying the bill. This teaches you to drink alcohol "casually"... Basically, your parents want to know that in some staff meeting in the future you can drink a beer, not slam tequila.
FOOD
Groceries are a pain, but staying with your parents means you get free food for the time being. This is a blessing AND a curse. You can easily put on five pounds eating your mom's homemade pot pie (I know I have). However, free food doesn't mean free calories. Keep your self on track.
OVERALL
Yes, you may go from living in a frat house with pretty much no rules, right back to square one over break. However - your parents are looking out for you. Keep that in mind as you hide the six-pack under your bed.
We're young "adults" now (yuck), and these rules that are re-implemented over break actually are in our best interest.
