10 Ways To Help You Beat The Winter Blues This Season

Now it's that time of year where the days are not only colder, but shorter! If you're like me, you get a little sad at these facts. Well, not anymore! Below you'll find some ways to help combat the seasonal depression or "winter blues."

1. A yoga session, without even getting out of bed!

Let’s face it, it’s cold and we want to stay under the covers longer. Why not linger a little bit while doing something healthy?

2. Superhero pose!

It's real, it's goofy, and it works. If you can't take my word for it, just look at the Head of Neurology, Amelia Shepherd, on Grey's Anatomy.

3. Vitamin D supplements, since the sun has decided to hibernate.

Giphy

You get Vitamin D from plenty of sources, but what is one people overlook? Our very own SUN! So when the days are shorter, add an extra vitamin to your daily routine.

4. A cup of hot tea.

Giphy

Just grab your favorite blend and warm up that kettle! If you want to add an extra boost, throw a pinch of cayenne, turmeric, and ginger to add that extra energy AND boost your metabolism.

5. Puppy playtime & cuddles.

Have a puppy? Play with them! It's a proven fact that a puppy's breath helps with depression. Don't have one? Go visit your friend's pet or drop in on adoption days at PetSmart.

6. Light calisthenics.

“Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy!” Oh, Elle Woods, you’re so right!

7. Listen to some cheery music and dance!

Now, Christmas might not be your jam, we get it. So why not put on some music that genuinely makes you smile? It could be any genre, but let's face it, "Jingle Bell Rock" will always make you want to swivel your hips like the Mean Girls did.

8. Lighten up your environment.

Transform your living space to open up the room and make it brighter! Add some flowers, candles, and lights. It'll definitely lift up your mood.

9. Wear a bright colored scarf or jacket.

We respond to colors on an emotional level, and a vibrant color has been shown to have positive effects on mood vs wearing dark colors that are typically worn in winter months.

10. If all else fails, take a break from being inside and go play in the leaves.

Just outstretch your arms and spin around. Heck, take your tea or coffee outside and read a book or walk your pet. Even if it's freezing outside, 5 minutes in the outdoors enjoying nature will definitely warm the soul right up.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
