It's getting to be the best time of the year, Fall! Temperatures are dropping, we're busting out our adorable sweaters and boots, couples are taking cute dates, everything is pumpkin scented or flavored, the leaves are turning an array of colors, and bugs are back in the hell from which they came. We can all take a little peace knowing were about to have 3 months of holidays, and arguably the best holidays. My favorite holiday is first and it's Halloween. I'm excited about the spooktacular decorations and gearing up for my favorite fall activity; working at a haunted house.
Haunted house attractions have been around for decades, heck the one I work for is in its 32nd year! If that's not impressive, I don't know what is. Haunted houses have been a great way for local communities to bring in a little more money during the fall season since they cater to a wide variety of people. Families come, adrenaline junkies come, drunkards come, everyone loves a good scare and a good time during fall. If you are ever given the opportunity you should work for a haunted house.
If you work for a haunted house, chances are you won't get paid, so it counts as volunteer work! It's a great way to give a little back to the community while having a good time. Culbertson Mansion here in New Albany has a haunted house and the money that they generate for having the haunted house goes toward the mansion for upkeep and other important things that the mansion might not be able to afford. Therefore the Culbertson Mansion haunted house is considered a non-profit and you can put that on your resume. Not only are you doing good for your community you're also building your resume and who doesn't want that?
Another thing that is amazing about working at a haunted house is the family you end up forming. There is a diverse group of people that work at haunts, from old to young, male to female, from cis gendered to transgenders, members of the LGBT+ community, black, white, Asians, latinos, and many various types of people with different backgrounds. We all come together, scare the crap out of people, and have a good time. By volunteering at a haunted house you will create for yourself a unique and diverse group of friends because to properly run a haunted house you have to have some level of cooperation from everyone involved and it makes it easier to just be a family.
Volunteering at haunted houses provides a unique and amazing opportunity that not everyone will have the privilege of doing, in the Kentuckiana area there so many haunts that finding one shouldn't be a problem. So take a chance, let you inner ghoul out and join a haunt. Become a haunter.
