If you're looking for a new show to binge this weekend, I'm here to recommend the HBO show Westworld. Currently, there is only one season out, but it's well worth the watch. Fair warning: there is quite a bit of nudity in the series, but it's for a purpose (I think).
Westworld is set in a time where technology has advanced to well past what it is today. The story takes place either in the far future or an alternate reality. The title refers to the amusement park the show revolves around; a hyper-realistic wild west adventure, complete with robotic "hosts" that contribute to the guests' fantasies.
The season opens up with a few of the hosts living their day-to-day lives until guests interfere. When guests chose to shoot or "damage" the hosts, they are taken in for repairs and put back into their cycle for another day in Westworld.
Throughout the season, the question of whether or not the hosts are gaining a conscious or not rises. This series strikes up a lot of interesting discussion on humanity and artificial intelligence. There were plenty of moments where I found myself confused on how I should feel about Westworld's android characters. The show makes it very easy to sympathize with the hosts, despite the human characters constant reassurance that they're "just robots" and "aren't real".
I love action-packed shows that make me think, so Westworld is an instant favorite of mine. I had been craving something sci-fi/fantasy/magical-realism-esque for a while. Needless to say, Westworld gets a 5/5 star rating for me. My only problem is having to wait for season 2!
