In today’s century, communication is done almost completely with technology. Snapchat, texting, emailing and calling. Even when people are with one another, they can be seen with their eyes glued to a screen, trying to be in contact with everyone possible. Social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram also keep us in constant contact with each other. Every status is a update on someone’s life, and people can’t seem to get enough.
I am a 21st century college student and I don’t like this method of communication.
Don’t get me wrong, I have all of the social media sites listed above and I’m practically addicted to all of them. I have more Snapchat streaks then you can count on one hand and I check Instagram every morning like it’s a newspaper. I’m also currently in a long distance relationship, so I think FaceTime and phone calls are a blessing. Personally, I just think letters are better.
There is nothing more special than getting a letter in the mail. Just knowing that somebody cares enough about you to take the time to handwrite a special note, physically put a stamp on it, and walk all the way out to the mailbox to send it to you means so much. To me, it’s the most intimate form of communication, especially in a romantic relationship.
If you’re a sentimental person, you can also save letters. I have a drawer in my desk entirely devoted to letters and cards I’ve received in the mail from my boyfriend, who's currently attending a college hundreds of miles away from mine. Then they’re there when you need to smile after a rough day.
One of the best feelings is when the letter I send to someone arrives at their house. I love getting a phone call or a text and hearing how meaningful the letter was, or how happy it made that person. There’s no better feeling than knowing that you made someone’s day. You can screenshot a text and save it to your camera roll, but it just isn’t the same thing. Letters are special.
It’s sad to me that today letters are few and far between. Writing a letter to someone you care about is an act of pure care and kindness that needs to be expressed more, especially in today’s world. The next time you’re missing someone or are wanting to reach out to a person you haven’t seen in awhile, instead of messaging them on Facebook, I encourage you to write them a letter. It’s a small act, but I promise you it’ll make their day.
